A delegation of 46 students, accompanied by three faculty members from the Army Law College in Pune, visited the Institute of Military Law (IML) in New Delhi on July 27, 2026. This visit was part of an educational initiative designed to provide aspiring legal professionals with insights into the military justice system and the legal framework of the Indian Army.
The students were given comprehensive briefings on the operations of the Institute of Military Law, the functions of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Branch, and the various legal career opportunities available within the Indian Army. These interactive sessions were pivotal in offering students a deeper understanding of the distinctive legal environment prevalent in the Armed Forces, where military law exists alongside the civilian legal system.
Officials from the IML elaborated on the significance of the JAG Branch, which plays a key role in advising military commanders on legal matters, administering military justice, and ensuring adherence to military laws and regulations. Additionally, the delegation learned about the professional duties of military legal officers and the pathways through which individuals can join the Indian Army as JAG officers.
The educational tour highlighted the state-of-the-art training infrastructure at the Institute, particularly the Brigadier Justice D.M. Sen Library. This library boasts an extensive collection of legal literature and military law references, supporting the training of military legal professionals.
The delegation also visited the Moot Court Martial Hall, where they were briefed on the procedures and practices within the Military Justice System. This facility offers realistic courtroom simulations aimed at training officers in court martial proceedings and other military legal processes. The demonstrations provided students with practical insights into the administration of military justice within the Armed Forces.
The Institute of Military Law stands as the foremost establishment for military legal education in India, playing a crucial role in the preparation of officers in the JAG Branch and other military personnel across various legal disciplines, including operational law, military justice, and international humanitarian law.
