Colonel Rawat was born on 25 March 1985 in Bhikyasain, Uttarakhand, and spent much of his childhood in Delhi, attending Green Fields School and Navyug School in Sarojini Nagar. Hailing from a family with deep ties to the defense sector, he was shaped by a disciplined upbringing, inspired mainly by his father, who retired as Personal Secretary to the Integrated Financial Advisor at the Integrated Defence Headquarters. Publicly available images reveal him adorned with the US Army Ranger Tab, Combat Diver Badge, US Paratrooper Wings, and Indian Army parachute and free-fall qualifications. A pivotal moment in Colonel Rawat’s career occurred in late December 2019, during a counter-infiltration mission along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel at the time, he led a specialized Special Forces team assigned the critical task of thwarting terrorist infiltration. Leveraging intelligence inputs, his team successfully laid an ambush along a likely infiltration route, enduring extreme weather conditions while remaining concealed for a staggering 36 hours until the terrorists appeared.
Upon establishing contact, Colonel Rawat showcased outstanding battlefield leadership. He deftly maneuvered his team into a favorable flanking position, directing one of his squad commanders to advance under enemy fire, which led to the elimination of two militants. As the situation escalated, he repositioned his team to maintain tactical advantage, ultimately taking initiative to confront the remaining terrorists directly, eliminating two more while severely injuring another. His composed decision-making and personal bravery were vital in ensuring the operation’s success, effectively preventing infiltration across the LoC.
In recognition of his conspicuous bravery and exemplary leadership during this operation, Colonel Rawat was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. The honor was announced in August 2020 and presented formally by President Ram Nath Kovind during the Defence Investiture Ceremony in November 2021. The citation highlighted his resolute leadership and valor under intense enemy fire, marking the operation as one of the notable Special Forces actions publicly acknowledged in recent years.
Following these remarkable achievements, Colonel Rawat ascended to command 1 PARA (Special Forces), one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most decorated Special Forces battalions. As the Commanding Officer, he has continued to exemplify the regiment’s core values of leadership, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to his soldiers. A notable instance of his leadership emerged after the martyrdom of Lance Naik Praveen Sharma during an anti-terror operation in Kokernag, when Colonel Rawat ensured that the soldier’s mortal remains were personally escorted to their native village, upholding the tradition that Special Forces commanders are responsible for their men both in life and death.
