INS Nipun Commissioned: India Strengthens Deep-Sea Diving Capability
The Indian Navy commissioned INS Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar Class, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on 31 August 2026. The induction marks an important enhancement of India’s capabilities in deep-sea diving, underwater intervention and submarine rescue operations.
Key Features of INS Nipun
- INS Nipun has been indigenously designed and constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam.
- It is a specialised vessel primarily intended for deep-sea diving and underwater operations.
- The vessel can support different types of diving operations, including saturation, air and heliox diving.
- It is equipped with remotely operated underwater systems for inspection and underwater intervention.
- The vessel can also support submarine rescue operations, providing the Navy with greater preparedness during underwater emergencies.
- Its commissioning strengthens India’s specialised underwater operational capabilities.
- The motto of INS Nipun is “Far Beneath, Few Beyond”, reflecting the determination, expertise and endurance required for deep-sea operations.
Why is INS Nipun Important?
The induction of INS Nipun represents another step towards strengthening India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding capabilities. Its specialised equipment will allow the Indian Navy to undertake complex underwater missions and provide assistance during submarine-related contingencies.
IAF International Squash Championship 2026
The IAF International Squash Championship 2026 commenced at the Base Repair Depot, Air Force Station Chandigarh, bringing together leading squash players from India and abroad.
The opening ceremony was attended by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, as the Chief Guest.

Bhoomi Pujan for 14 Development Projects in Lucknow Cantonment
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath performed the Bhoomi Pujan for 14 development projects at Lucknow Cantonment.
The projects have a combined value of more than ₹100 crore and are aimed at improving civic infrastructure and public facilities in the cantonment.
Major Projects
The projects cover several areas, including:
- Artificial Intelligence-based Solid Waste Management Plant
- Multi-Utility Sports Complex
- Modern Crematorium
- 1,500 KL Underground Reservoir
- Replacement of old water-supply pipelines
- Tubewells with SCADA automation
- Overhead water tanks with SCADA
- Special School for Differently Abled Children
- Additional classrooms and toilets in schools
- Multi-Level Robotic Car Parking and Commercial Complex
- Legacy Waste Bio-Mining and Bio-Remediation
Two projects are being implemented in collaboration with the state government:
- RA Bazar City Polyclinic
- Mukhyamantri Abhyudaya Coaching Centre
Around 4,000 people also participated in the programme and listened to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme.
The projects are intended to improve education, healthcare, sanitation, water supply, sports facilities and urban infrastructure in Lucknow Cantonment.
SCO Summit 2026: Major Leaders Meet in Bishkek
The 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit is being held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, with leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian participating.
The summit marks 25 years of the SCO and is being conducted under the theme:
“Together for Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity.”

PM Modi’s Meeting with Vladimir Putin
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The two leaders discussed:
- India-Russia bilateral relations
- The Russia-Ukraine conflict
- Major regional developments
- The importance of peace and diplomacy
PM Modi emphasised India’s position that prolonged conflicts should move towards peaceful resolution.
He also highlighted the message of peace associated with Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha.
India and the SCO
India’s participation in the SCO provides an important platform for discussions on regional security, economic cooperation, connectivity and geopolitical developments.
India Rejects Permanent Court of Arbitration’s Indus Waters Ruling
The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) at The Hague has issued a ruling concerning the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) between India and Pakistan.
According to the information provided, the PCA held that the treaty remains in force and directed India to continue observing its obligations under the agreement.
The ruling also addressed India’s decision to place the treaty in “abeyance” and included directions concerning construction activities related to the Ratle hydro-electric project in Jammu and Kashmir.
India’s Position
India has rejected the jurisdiction of the Court of Arbitration in this matter. According to India’s position, it does not recognise the Court of Arbitration constituted in 2023 at Pakistan’s request and has not participated in its proceedings.
India has repeatedly maintained that its decision regarding the Indus Waters Treaty was taken in the context of national security concerns following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack.
Indus Waters Treaty
The Indus Waters Treaty was signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan with the World Bank’s involvement. The agreement governs the utilisation of the waters of the Indus river system by the two countries.
The dispute over the treaty has become another major point of tension in India-Pakistan relations.
