The Central Bureau of Investigation has taken Income Tax Inspector Subhash Kumar Yadav into custody after an alleged ₹15 lakh bribery demand tied to a benami property matter. The arrest was made in Mumbai, and the case is connected to the Income Tax Department’s Benami Prohibition Unit.
CBI case and allegations
According to the CBI, the agency registered a case on October 27, 2026, against Yadav and unknown others after receiving a complaint from a Mumbai-based individual. The complainant alleged that Yadav sought ₹20 lakh to close the pending benami property case, and the amount was later settled at ₹15 lakh after negotiation.
The complaint is said to have followed a notice issued in February 2026. As reported, the complainant visited the Scindia House office, where he submitted his explanation before a senior officer in the presence of Yadav and another Income Tax inspector. He was later called back several times. In a later meeting near Scindia House, the two inspectors allegedly took him to a roadside tea stall and demanded the money. The complainant then approached the CBI.
Trap operation and recovery
The CBI laid a trap on Tuesday, October 27, and arrested Yadav while he was allegedly accepting the ₹15 lakh from the complainant. After the arrest, searches at his premises led to the recovery of ₹11 lakh in cash and incriminating documents. Electronic devices were also seized for further examination.
Yadav was produced before a competent court in Mumbai on Wednesday, October 28, and the court remanded him to two days’ CBI custody until October 30. The court said the custody was required for a detailed probe into the possible role of other accused persons, examination of digital devices, and collection of a specimen voice sample. The CBI told the court that Yadav had not cooperated and had given evasive replies about the bribe money and others involved.
Further investigation
Additional reporting cited by The Times of India says Yadav had been transferred from Benami Prohibition Unit-I in June 2026 and was working in the Investigation Wing at the time of his arrest. The agency is now examining his work record and access to confidential information linked to the unit, while also reviewing the recovered documents and identifying any other persons involved.
The CBI has confirmed the arrest through an official statement and a social media post. The matter remains under investigation, and the allegations are still subject to judicial scrutiny.
This report is based on contemporaneous accounts from the CBI and multiple news outlets published on October 28–29, 2026.
