Two brothers were arrested in Malda, West Bengal, after an alleged confrontation with a traffic Assistant Sub-Inspector during a helmet-checking drive on the Naogama-Pukhuria stretch under Pukhuria police station limits.
What Police Say Happened
According to police, the incident took place on Wednesday evening, around 28–29 October 2026, when ASI Ajmal Hossain, also referred to in reports as Azam Hossain or Sheikh Ajmal, stopped a motorcycle carrying two riders who were not wearing helmets. The officer, who was with the traffic department, allegedly asked for the driving licence and started taking photographs of the vehicle for record-keeping, after which an argument broke out.
Police allege that Masidur Rahaman, described as an Agniveer in the Indian Army and a resident of Paranpur village in Pukhuria, punched the ASI on the nose. His brother, Safikul Rahman, also spelled Sofikul or Shafiqul in some reports, is accused of abusing the police personnel at the scene.
Injury and Damage Reported
The officer reportedly suffered a bleeding nose and needed three stitches at a local hospital. Police also said his body camera and the point-of-sale machine used for collecting traffic fines were damaged during the incident.
Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh said the pair had violated traffic rules and then became involved in a dispute while photographs were being taken. “Two bikers violated traffic rules. When photographs were being taken, they argued with the officer, punched him, and broke his camera. We have arrested both, and cases have been registered for assault, obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty, and damaging government property,” the SP said.
Legal Action and Ongoing Probe
Police said cases have been registered against the brothers under relevant provisions relating to assault, obstruction of a public servant in the discharge of official duties, and damage to government property. Authorities also informed Masidur Rahaman’s army superiors about his arrest.
Reports indicate that the Agniveer was on leave at the time, and some accounts place his posting in Madhya Pradesh. The brothers were taken into custody after the incident, and the investigation is continuing. They are expected to be produced before the court in due course as per procedure.
This account is based on statements from Malda police and local news reports. The allegations remain under investigation, and all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
