About the ITBP
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police is one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces and functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was established on October 24, 1962, after the India-China War, and is tasked primarily with guarding the India-China border, which stretches approximately 3,488 kilometres from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh.
ITBP personnel are deployed in difficult high-altitude Himalayan terrain where temperatures can fall below freezing. The force is also involved in border security, surveillance, disaster response, rescue operations and maintaining security in sensitive areas.
What the new DG will oversee
As Director General, Sanjay Singhal will be responsible for the force’s operational preparedness, border management, personnel welfare, training and administrative functioning.

The appointment comes at a time when strengthening border infrastructure, improving surveillance capabilities and maintaining the readiness of security forces along India’s northern frontiers remain key national security priorities.

The transition also marks a new leadership phase for the ITBP as it continues its work under the motto, “Shaurya, Dridhata, Karm Nishtha” (Valour, Determination, Devotion to Duty).
