DRDO Successfully Tests Indigenous Quasi-Ballistic Missile ‘Pralay’
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a flight test of the indigenous quasi-ballistic missile Pralay on 5 November 2026.
The test was carried out at approximately 11:10 AM from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, located off the Odisha coast.
Test Performance
According to the supplied information, the missile successfully achieved all its designated test objectives. The performance was confirmed through data collected by various range instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur.
The flight test formed part of the user evaluation trials and was witnessed by senior DRDO officials, representatives from the defence industry and members of the Armed Forces.
Indigenous Development
The Pralay missile has been developed indigenously by:
- Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad
- Other DRDO laboratories
Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), one of the Development-cum-Production Partners, has manufactured the missile system.
Significance
The successful trial represents an important milestone in India’s indigenous missile development programme. It also indicates progress towards the system’s induction into the Armed Forces, with the supplied material describing induction as imminent.
The development strengthens India’s efforts to enhance domestic defence manufacturing and improve its indigenous missile capabilities.

BEL Nears ₹30,000 Crore Order for QRSAM System
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is expected to secure a major defence contract worth approximately ₹30,000 crore for the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system.
The proposed deal is awaiting final clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). BEL’s management has indicated that approval could be received shortly.
Scope of the Proposed Contract
The proposed procurement covers the complete QRSAM air defence system rather than just the missiles. The package is expected to provide the Indian Army with a comprehensive, multi-layered air defence capability.
The system is intended to help counter several types of aerial threats, including:
- Aircraft
- Helicopters
- Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and drones
- Precision-guided munitions
Importance for BEL
The QRSAM contract is considered one of the major upcoming business opportunities for BEL.
The company has projected total annual order inflows of approximately ₹55,000 crore. The proposed QRSAM deal could contribute a substantial share of this target.
Without this contract, the anticipated order inflows are estimated to be around ₹25,000 crore, highlighting the financial importance of the project for the company.
Significance for India’s Defence Sector
The proposed procurement is part of India’s broader strategy to strengthen indigenous defence production and reduce dependence on imported military systems.
It is also expected to support domestic defence manufacturers and enhance the Indian Army’s ability to respond quickly to emerging aerial threats.
Note: The ₹30,000 crore contract is awaiting CCS approval; it should not be described as a finalised or awarded contract.

India Moves Towards Procurement of Nearly 4,000 Pinaka Rockets
India is preparing for a significant expansion of its indigenous Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) programme, with approximately 4,000 rockets reportedly in the procurement pipeline.
The proposed requirement is broadly divided between the Indian Army and an overseas customer, Armenia.
Proposed Procurement Details
The planned procurement includes:
| Intended customer | Approximate quantity |
|---|---|
| Indian Army | 2,000 rockets |
| Armenia | 2,000 rockets |
| Total | 4,000 rockets |
Procurement Progress
According to disclosures by Apollo Micro Systems’ management during its earnings call, the Indian Army’s procurement process has progressed through important stages, including:
- Request for Quotation (RFQ)
- Bidding
- Negotiations
Contracts could potentially be awarded before the end of December 2026, subject to the completion of the prescribed procurement procedures.
Companies Involved
The manufacturing and supply chain is expected to involve several Indian defence companies:
- Munitions India Limited
- Solar Industries India
- Bharat Forge
- Apollo Micro Systems
Apollo Micro Systems has also confirmed its participation in the quotation process.
Armenia’s Role
Armenia has emerged as an important international buyer of Indian defence equipment. It was the first foreign country to acquire India’s Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system.
Significance
The proposed procurement highlights the increasing importance of India’s private and public-sector defence industries in meeting domestic military requirements as well as international demand.
The Pinaka programme is an example of India’s growing indigenous artillery capabilities and its efforts to expand defence exports.
