Defence Minister Rajnath Singh observed Diwali in Sikkim by paying homage to fallen personnel at the Sherathang War Memorial and meeting Indian Army troops serving in forward areas. The tribute honoured those who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.
Remembering the fallen
During his visit, Singh reflected on the meaning of war memorials, saying they stand as reminders of courage, sacrifice and national pride. Beyond commemorating those who died, he noted, they can inspire future generations to uphold the values for which the soldiers gave their lives.
He invoked the saying, “Monuments are for the living, not the dead,” and highlighted the role of memorials in preserving the memory of personnel who sacrificed their lives while defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Diwali with troops in forward areas
Singh met Indian Army personnel deployed in Sikkim’s strategically important forward areas. He recognised their dedication, operational commitment and high morale amid extreme weather and challenging mountainous terrain.
Comparing the troops to the traditional lamps of Diwali, the Defence Minister described the jawans as “diyas” who silently fight darkness and carry the light of security to homes across the country. He praised their vigilance along the frontiers while millions of citizens celebrate with their families, noting that their presence helps people observe the festival in peace and security.
Singh said he was proud to celebrate Diwali among the personnel protecting India’s borders. He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by their families, who may spend important festivals away from loved ones.

The Defence Minister extended Diwali greetings to military personnel serving along India’s borders and their families, wishing them happiness, prosperity and continued strength.
The visit to Sherathang recognised the dedication and sacrifices of Armed Forces personnel, particularly those serving in high-altitude border regions. The occasion honoured fallen soldiers and acknowledged the courage and commitment of troops continuing to safeguard the nation.
