Being an enthusiast in Indian defence affairs and also the basic subjects of general knowledge like Polity, Geography and current affairs, scoring well in AFCAT for the last three years was something particularly good lesson for me. I have given six of these until now. It was only the first AFCAT that I was not qualified but later, all the others were particularly good ones. The second and the third time that I was writing AFCAT, I religiously prepared for the examination and gave my best. I did qualify for them but was not able to attend the AFSB interview since I had a gut feeling that even if I get recommended, my low AFCAT marks might put me under the pressure of not being on the merit list in future. So many thoughts have occupied my brain and too many tasks were to be done both at home and at college. The fourth AFCAT that I gave, I qualified with a good amount of marks and I attended the AFSB interview, but I was not recommended there. It is not just about scoring in the examination but the big picture after that was something that I was surely making plans for many years.

Why most candidates do not qualify examination after feeling that they gave well?

Most of the aspirants, after giving their best for 2 hours in the examination hall, come out with different faces. Some faces will be happy, some sad, some confused, and some still doing internal prayers that they are unaware of the result, but they want to get qualified. So what happens to the people and why some of them will not be able to make it? Here are some points I would like to say from my experiences:

  • You tend to concentrate only on one part of the examination: Be it Reasoning General Knowledge or English or Aptitude, it is important and mandatory that you know your standards in these parts of the examination. How many of you have particularly cross-checked about what you gave in the examination after coming out, at least after 2 days or so? Most have a feeling that we can’t change our responses so waste of re-checking it. Do not be in that trance. Just check the answers that you gave. From the analysis of the previous years’ question papers done by SSBCrack Exams, it is truly clear that 25% of the AFCAT paper is surely repeated. This means, if you practice from previous years’ papers, 25% of your new exam’s preparation is properly done.
  • You tend to misread the information: This means that you lack in collecting the daily current affairs topics in a proper way. Ever thought why SSBCrack Exams is making Daily Current Affairs and Daily Defence Current Affairs in two separate streams? This is because we are defence aspirants and it is our motive to know our forces a better way, to be updated and confident on where our nation stands. Pertaining to the AFCAT 2 2023, You must be incredibly careful in choosing what you pick. Do not pick things “that you like”; always pick things “that may be probably asked”. I did the same mistake of reading just newspapers. But it took me a year to understand that these days newspapers are publishing opinions more than news. So be careful.
  • You do not try new methods, or you are not interested in learning shortcuts: This happens every time while solving Mathematics. Most candidates feel like it is extremely easy to solve problems of time and distance, profit and loss, time and work etc. But it is especially important that you know the tricks and formulae. About 20 questions of AFCAT are of numerical ability and this section might be asked at any level of difficulty. So please be aware of the new formulae. You can go through the AFCAT course videos of Numerical Ability of SSBCrack Exams. In fact, I learnt many new ways to solve problems there. While learning from a book, it generally takes time for me to reach core formulae since I spend time on noting introductions, but from the app, I got to cut down unwanted information and my learning was up to the point. Even during the last 3 hours before the exam, I was watching Laxmi Mam’s Profit and Loss videos in the app. They were very fruitful.
  • You are constantly taking the exam for granted: It did happen to me too. Some sort of pseudo-confidence tries to hack the brain and tells us that it’s just 25 GK questions and only 20 questions of Mathematics and so on – so nothing to worry and all is easy. Well, this confidence will be fruitful when it is coupled with effort. Without smart work or hard work, this can be detrimental. While appearing this time in AFCAT 2 2020, I understood that whatever the situation or my preparation is, I must be poised. I gave my exam well and I did not even know that I was able to finish the exam 15 minutes before the final time.
