World Ozone Day
- Every year, 16th September is observed as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone layer (World Ozone Day).
- After the Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the ozone layer signed by almost every country in 1987, the United Nation General Assembly, in 1994, proclaimed this day as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
- 2021 Theme: Montreal Protocol – Keeping us, our food, and vaccines cool.
Exercise SCO Peaceful Mission 2021
- The 6th edition of Exercise Peaceful Mission is being hosted by Russia from 13th to 25th September 2021.
- India participated for the first time in the 5th edition of the Exercise (2018).
- It is a Multilateral and Joint Counter Terrorism Exercise, which is conducted biennially as part of military diplomacy between Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states.
Prof. S.K. Joshi Laboratory Excellence Award
- QCI launched the Prof. S.K. Joshi Laboratory Excellence Award today virtually amidst eminent dignitaries from Government & Industry.
- This is country’s first-of-its- kind Laboratory Excellence Award.
- This Award has been instituted to promote Laboratory Quality and performance improvement in the country.
- The award has been incepted to ensure the laboratory’s commitment to achieve excellence in providing high precision testing and calibration services in line with the prevalent national/international quality systems legislations, including Health, Safety & Environment.
- This award will be open to all currently operational Laboratories pertaining to Testing, Calibration & Medical including their Proficiency Testing Providers & Reference Material Producers located in India.
- Prof. Shri Krishna Joshi (6 June 1935-15 May 2020) was an Indian physicist. He was born on 6 June 1935 in the village of Anarpa in Kumaun, Uttarakhand, India.
- He was Professor of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee from 1967 to 1986. He was the Director of the National Physical Laboratory from 1986 to 1991. In 1991, he was appointed the Director General of the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
15th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers Meeting
- 15th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers Meeting was held today virtually.
- Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, Union Minister of State for Power, attended the meeting.
- The theme of the meeting “We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper”, aimed at coordinating efforts of ASEAN countries in pursuing the goal of energy security and energy transition that will benefit the people of our region.
- The East Asia Summit (EAS) is a regional forum held annually by leaders of, initially, 16 countries in the East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and Oceanian regions, based on the ASEAN Plus Six mechanism.
- Membership expanded to 18 countries including Russia and the United States at the Sixth EAS in 2011.
NITI Aayog launches report on measures to ramp up urban planning capacity in India
- NITI Aayog has launched a report on measures to ramp up urban planning capacity in India. The report, titled ‘Reforms in Urban Planning Capacity in India’, was released by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant, and Special Secretary Dr. K. Rajeswara Rao. The report has been developed by NITI Aayog, in consultation with concerned ministries and eminent experts in the domain of urban and regional planning. The report presents a condensed outcome of the extensive deliberations and consultations conducted over a period of nine months.
- On the occasion, NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr. Rajiv Kumar said, in the coming years, urban India will power the growth of the Indian economy. He added that urban challenges, including town planning, need greater policy attention in the country.
- NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant emphasized that urbanization is the driving force of the Indian economy, and the country has reached a turning point in its transformation. It will be half urban in a couple of decades. He said, greater synergies among the public and private sectors and education institutions will provide a massive boost towards making Indian cities more liveable, competitive, and sustainable.
- The report has made several recommendations that can unblock bottlenecks in the value chain of urban planning capacity in India. Some of them include programmatic Intervention for Planning of Health, Re-engineering of Urban Governance, Revision of Town, and Country Planning Acts.

- Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the JAM (Jan Dhan - Aadhaar – Mobile) Trinity has been a game changer for India, enabling us to take forward financial inclusion in a futuristic format.
