ALH MK III inducted into INAS 322 at SNC

  • The Indian Navy inducted an indigenous ALH MK III aircraft IN 746 into SNC at Kochi on 28 March 2022 with a traditional water cannon salute. Commodore VB Bellary, Commanding Officer, INS Garuda, welcomed the aircraft and the crew. He added that ALH MK III Maritime Reconnaissance and Coastal Security (MRCS) with its Radar, EO/ IR suite along with advanced sensor and avionics package sensor would definitely be a force multiplier in SNC AOR.
  • Captain Ajay Yadav, Commanding Officer of INAS 322, said that the addition of ALH MK III would enable refining of guidelines and SOPs towards deriving maximum training value as well as optimal aircraft/ system exploitation.
  •  INAS 322 with its integral ALH helicopters has played a central role in life-saving and humanitarian missions since her inception, the most recent examples being cyclones Ockhi and Tauktae. The addition of a capable platform such as an ALH MK III would definitely enhance the unit’s operational footprint.

INAS 316 Commissioned at INS Hansa

  • The Indian Navy on Tuesday commissioned its second long-range maritime reconnaissance air squadron comprising a fleet of Boeing P-8I aircraft, adding muscle to the country’s surveillance in the Indian Ocean.
  • Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 316 was commissioned at the INS Hansa, a naval air station near Dabolim in Goa, in the presence of chief of naval staff, admiral R Hari Kumar.
  • “With the commissioning of INAS 316, we will be inducting four new P-8Is, delivered under the option clause with Boeing,” Kumar said. “These aircraft, with advanced maritime patrol radars, state-of-the-art acoustic suites, air-to-ship missiles and torpedoes are substantial capability enhancers.”
  • The new squadron has been raised amid growing concerns over China’s increasing forays into the Indian Ocean, considered the backyard of the Indian Navy.
  • INAS 316 has been christened the Condors after one of the largest birds in the world. The insignia of the squadron depicts a condor searching over the blue expanse of the sea.
  • The P-8I aircraft is powered by twin jet engines and can be equipped with air-to-ship missiles and torpedoes. The Indian Navy acquired the first batch of eight P-8I aircraft in 2013 that are stationed at INS Rajali in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu.

MOD Sign Contract for IEWR

  • The MoD of India and Bharat Electronics Limited, Hyderabad signed a Contract for Instrumented Electronic Warfare Range for the IAF, here today. The contract is a significant step towards enhancing the capabilities of IAF to prepare for future warfare. The overall cost of the contract is estimated to be ₹ 1109 Cr.
    •  The IEWR will be used to test and evaluate airborne Electronic Warfare (EW) equipment and validate their deployment in an Operational Scenario. The Project essentially embodies the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat and will help facilitate realising the journey towards self-reliance.

“EX DUSTLIK” CONCLUDES IN UZBEKISTAN

  • The 3rd edition of Indo-Uzbekistan Joint Field Training Exercise “EX DUSTLIK” concluded at Yangiarik, Uzbekistan on 29 March 2022. The joint exercise provided an opportunity for both the contingents to train in Counter Terrorism operations in an semi-urban environment.
  • “Exercise DUSTLIK” will enhance the level of defence cooperation between both the Armies and will act as a catalyst for many such joint programs in future to further consolidate the traditional bond of friendship between India and Uzbekistan.

Assam, Meghalaya Sign Border Pact

  • Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday signed a historic agreement for the settlement of inter-state border dispute in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
  • The Home Minister said it is “a historic day” for a dispute-free northeast and noted that in a short span of time, 6 out of 12 issues have been settled between Assam and Meghalaya and about 70 per cent of the border between the two states has become dispute-free.
  • According to the proposed recommendations for the 36.79 square km of land, Assam will keep 18.51 square km and give the remaining 18.28 square km to Meghalaya.
  • He said during the last three years, the union government has signed several agreements for ending extremism and for lasting peace in the northeastern states.
  • The Home Minister said PM Modi has made several efforts for the peace process, development, prosperity, and promotion of the cultural heritage of the northeast, which “we all have witnessed, since 2014, when he became the Prime Minister”.
  • Looking at the journey from 2019 to 2022, there have seen many big achievements in establishing peace in the Northeast – NLFT agreement in August 2019, the Bru-Reang agreement on January 16, 2020, the Bodo agreement on January 27, 2020, the Karbi-Anglong agreement on September 4, 2021, and today’s Assam-Meghalaya border agreement.
  • The long-standing land dispute was sparked in 1972 when Meghalaya was carved out of Assam. The border issues came as a result of different readings of the demarcation of boundaries in the initial agreement for the new state’s creation.

India Plans to Indigenize 153 Defence Items By Dec 2022

  • The Ministry of Defence on Monday informed the Rajya Sabha that 153 defence items are planned to be indigenized upto December this year, and there is “no stoppage on their exports”.
  • “Two positive indigenisation lists comprising 101 and 108 items were promulgated by the Department of Military Affairs (DMA) Ministry of Defence (MoD) on August 21, 2020, and May 31, 2021, respectively.

Indian LCA Combat Aircraft Now Being Armed with American JDAM Precision Bombing Kits

  • In a major capability boost for the indigenous LCA Tejas combat aircraft, the Indian Air Force is equipping them with American Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits which would help them target enemy positions with pinpoint accuracy.
  • The Indian Air Force had recently signed a contract for the JDAM kits which help air to ground bombs attack their targets with precision at distances of over 80 km.
  • The Indian Air Force had recently equipped the Tejas with the French-origin Hammer air to ground stand-off missile along with the indigenous Astra indigenous air to air missiles.

Army Chief to review Operational preparedness along Northern and Western borders tomorrow

  • Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane is scheduled to visit Central Command HQ in Lucknow on Wednesday to preside over deliberations on wide-ranging subjects concerning military preparedness.
  • The Army Chief is scheduled to review the deployment of Indian Army formations in Western and Northern borders while they are transitioning from winter to summer posturing.
  • Senior Army, Navy and Air force officers will be attending a series of discussions focused on reviewing the current international and regional environment with a view to progressively increase their own capabilities through force level optimisation, technology adoption, induction of Force Multipliers while modernising and improving infrastructure.
