IAF Plans For Six More ‘Netra’ Early Warning Aircraft 

  • The Air Force is planning to induct more of the ‘Netra’ early warning and control aircraft to its fleet, in a show of confidence in the indigenous system that demonstrated its capabilities to track enemy aircraft and direct quick responses during the Balakot operations in 2019.
  • Sources said six additional aircraft are being planned to be acquired by the Air Force as part of a $1 billion plan to add force multipliers in the Air Force. The Netra system has been developed by the DRDO which is also working on a next generation Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS India) programme.
  • The Air Force currently has two Netra systems that are mounted on the Embraer 145 jet. The additional six systems will be on the same jet and efforts are on to scout for aircraft in the secondary market as they are no longer in production.

Boeing Pitches For More P8I Aircraft For Indian Navy                               

  • Pitching for the sale of additional P8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft for the Indian Navy, US aerospace manufacturer Boeing has said that the expanded fleet will result in an economic impact of $1.5 billion to the domestic industry in the next decade.
  • The Indian Navy currently operates a fleet of 12 P8I aircraft that are tasked with carrying out long-range maritime operations.
  • Boeing played a pivotal role in establishing the Ashok Roy Training Simulator Complex at INS Rajali, and the Kochi training complex, inaugurated in April this year, officials of the company said.

Visit OF CDS To Central Servicing Development Organisation 

  • Gen Anil Chauhan visited CSDO at New Delhi on 21 Sep 23. He was received by Air Marshal CR Mohan CSDO is a premiere institute entrusted with the responsibility of formulation of maintenance philosophies of IAF.
  • During the visit, he was briefed on the capabilities of two critical Enterprise Resource Planning Software of IAF i.e., Integrated Material Management Online System for automated inventory management and Electronic Maintenance Management System for maintenance management.
  • The CDS appreciated the expanse of the two ERPs which were conceived with the aim of Digital India. He also emphasized the importance of expansion of both the ERPs amongst all three services for integrated maintenance and inventory management.

ICG Pollution-Control Vessel ‘Samudra Prahari’                     

  • ICG Pollution-Control Vessel ‘Samudra Prahari’ carried out a comprehensive Pollution Response Table-Top exercise and demonstration at Khlong Toei Port in Bangkok, Thailand on September 20, 2023, the final of its four-day visit.
  • The exercise involved personnel from Thailand’s Maritime Enforcement Coordination Centre, Customs Department, Marine Department, Royal Navy, Fisheries Department and other government officials.
  • It fostered knowledge sharing and an interactive environment among the services, ensuring seamless cooperation during real-life oil pollution scenarios. The exercise demonstrated ICG’s pollution response capabilities and India’s shared commitment towards the region.

Israël Unveils Next Generation Artificially Intelligent Tank

  • Israel’s Defence Ministry unveiled its next-generation tank, the artificially intelligent Barak.
  • The Barak, or Lightning, includes AI-based sensing and processing capabilities and includes an unprecedented 360-degree “pilot’s helmet” for the tank commander, as well as multi-touch screens and controls.
  • The tank will be able to adapt itself to the needs of the tank commander — and even more senior commanders not physically present — who may be interested in different aspects of battlefield information.
  • The “pilot’s helmet,” referred to as Iron Vision, “generates an image that enables the crew to ‘see through’ the vehicle’s armour” and will allow the crew to “overcome inherent visibility limitations, while improving mission efficiency and safety,” according to Elbit Systems, which developed the headgear.
