Agile Defense Secures Major Subcontract for US Navy IT System Modernization

Agile Defense has announced a significant subcontract under a $44-million program initiated by the US Navy to support the modernization and security of the Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) global information technology systems. The contract, awarded to Savvee Consulting as part of the GSA Multiple Award Schedule, spans five and a half years and focuses on enhancing IT engineering support to improve cybersecurity readiness.

The primary objectives of this initiative include streamlining enterprise operations and bolstering system resilience throughout MSC’s extensive maritime logistics network. Agile Defense, serving as a key subcontractor, will apply its expertise in cybersecurity, data-driven analytics, and sustainment services to strengthen MSC’s operational capabilities. The command operates a fleet of over 130 civilian-crewed ships responsible for transporting essential supplies, fuel, and equipment to US military forces and their allies.

Jay Burkhardt, Vice President for Navy and Marine Corps Operations at Agile Defense, highlighted the significance of this partnership, noting its alignment with the firm’s commitment to incorporating secure and efficient digital systems within naval operations. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Navy to enhance mission assurance through a fortified digital infrastructure, reflecting ongoing efforts within the Department of Defense to improve cyber hygiene across both operational technology and maritime assets.

The MSC is recognized as the primary provider of maritime logistics and sealift operations for the US Navy, ensuring that deployed forces receive critical supplies, fuel, and ammunition wherever they are needed globally. Headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, MSC’s diverse fleet ranges from fast combat support vessels to ocean surveillance and hospital ships, serving as a vital component of the Pentagon’s global supply chain.

The command recently expanded its capabilities with the introduction of the John Lewis-class fleet oilers in 2025, designed specifically for more efficient refueling support to carrier strike groups. Additionally, MSC has been implementing enhanced cybersecurity measures across its auxiliary ships to meet Navy Cybersecurity Readiness standards. Earlier this year, MSC also completed upgrades to its Global Maritime Operations Center, which now allows for real-time tracking and coordination of logistics vessels on a worldwide scale.
