As the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of the 45 Wing stationed at Sirsa, Haryana, he was pivotal during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. This high-stakes conflict served as a litmus test for India’s integrated air defence capabilities.
Faced with persistent threats from aerial and missile attacks in western airspace, Air Commodore Kapil ensured that air defence systems were maintained at peak readiness. His proactive leadership and swift strategic decisions played a crucial role in neutralizing significant missile threats, thereby safeguarding vital regions and reinforcing the integrity of India’s multi-layered air defence framework.
In acknowledgment of his exceptional service and leadership during challenging operations, he received the Yudh Seva Medal in 2025 from the President of India, a recognition that underscores his contributions to national security amidst operational strain.
Air Commodore Kapil’s career has been characterized by flying excellence and leadership since he was commissioned into the Flying Branch of the IAF on June 20, 1998. Specializing on the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, one of the most advanced multirole fighters in the IAF, he has logged over 3,500 flight hours across various aircraft platforms. His qualifications include being a Category ‘A’ Flying Instructor, highlighting his dual role as an operational pilot and a mentor to aspiring fighter pilots. His efforts have significantly bolstered the IAF’s human resource development and combat readiness.
In March 2016, he took command of a reactivated frontline Su-30MKI squadron, where his leadership was instrumental in rapid operational stabilization, effective induction of new aircraft, and the maintenance of high serviceability rates. His consistent focus on rigorous training and disciplined mission preparedness greatly improved the squadron’s overall efficiency. This dedication earned him the Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty) on January 26, 2018, while serving as a Group Captain.

During Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to a significant terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, Air Commodore Kapil was tasked with ensuring seamless coordination between air operations and ground-based air defence systems. His responsibilities included real-time decision-making and integrating radar and missile networks while maintaining high operational momentum across multiple domains.
The air defence systems under his command effectively neutralized incoming threats during the conflict, validating the capabilities of indigenous and integrated technologies in securing national airspace. Currently, as AOC of the 45 Wing, Air Commodore Kapil continues to manage a key operational base within the Indian Air Force.
