In a ceremonious and dignified transition, Air Marshal Balakrishnan Manikantan has officially taken charge as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Central Air Command of the Indian Air Force (IAF). His formal assumption of command was marked by a Guard of Honour and a wreath-laying ceremony, highlighting the rich traditions and discipline that characterize the IAF.

Air Marshal Manikantan’s career spans nearly four decades, during which he has accumulated over 5,500 hours of flying experience. His tenure as the AOC-in-C of the Southern Air Command, a position he held since May 1, 2023, demonstrated the trust placed in his seasoned leadership and strategic vision. His recent appointment to the Central Air Command underscores this continued confidence as he steps into a vital role within the IAF.

Commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF on June 7, 1986, Air Marshal Manikantan is a distinguished alumnus of several prominent defense institutions in India. His educational background includes training at the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, College of Defence Management, and the National Defence College. He also holds the title of Helicopter Combat Leader and is a Type Qualified Flying Instructor, showcasing his extensive expertise and capabilities.

Born into an educational family in Thiruvarppu, Kottayam, Kerala, Air Marshal Manikantan’s upbringing emphasized dedication to service. His foundational training at Sainik School, Kazhakootam, set the stage for his lifelong commitment to the nation. Throughout his career, he has been recognized with multiple honours, including Commendation Cards from the AOC-in-C of Training Command in 1988 and the GOC-in-C of Northern Command in 2015.

Before his recent role at the Southern Command, he demonstrated versatile leadership as the Senior Air & Administration Staff Officer at Maintenance Command in Nagpur, effectively blending operational acumen with administrative expertise.

The Central Air Command, headquartered in Prayagraj, is one of the five operational commands of the IAF, playing a crucial role in India’s air defense and strategic air operations.
