Airbus Defence and Space has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Quantum Systems, aimed at achieving seamless integration between advanced command systems and tactical aerial reconnaissance technologies for European militaries. This partnership is designed to facilitate the “rapid and effective” optimization of military technologies, with an emphasis on protecting the regional technological sovereignty.
In a response to the evolving global security landscape, the collaboration aims to develop airborne surveillance and information products that are interoperable, mission-ready, and deployable within a short to medium timeframe. The consortium indicates that these new systems will incorporate critical lessons learned from the ongoing defense operations in Ukraine, ensuring future users maintain “full control” over their technology, data, and further developments.
Airbus Defence and Space CEO Mike Schoellhorn highlighted that this partnership aligns with Airbus’ strategic vision to foster a European ecosystem in military aviation. He elaborated that the focus is on maintaining Europe’s sovereignty in artificial intelligence-supported mission systems and facilitating effective collaboration between crewed and uncrewed aerial vehicles. This “software first” approach is expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of military operations while ensuring the adaptability of the systems developed.
Airbus has historically been involved in various aerospace-related intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance initiatives across European countries such as Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Quantum Systems, based in Gilching, is recognized as a key supplier of unmanned aerial systems, having established a solid presence with international partners, including Germany, New Zealand, Romania, and Spain. Recently, the company has expanded its operations by opening a second facility in Ukraine to provide increased support for the autonomous systems used in the country’s reconnaissance missions.
With this partnership, both companies are set to redefine the capabilities of European militaries, harnessing cutting-edge technology in an era characterized by rapidly changing security needs.
