Albania Enhances Military Capabilities with New Israeli Defense Deal

Albania is poised to enhance its military capabilities and domestic arms production through an agreement with Israeli defense contractor Elbit Systems. This partnership involves the procurement of advanced military hardware, including 155mm truck-mounted ATMOS howitzers, 120mm SPEAR mortars, and two types of tactical drones: the Magni-X and the Thor.

According to reports, Elbit Systems will not only supply these systems but will also play a key role in establishing production lines within Albania. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Edi Rama’s broader strategy to modernize the Albanian armed forces and cultivate a self-sufficient defense industry.

The Magni-X drone, a compact quadcopter, can carry a payload of up to 1.5 kilograms (approximately 3.3 pounds) and has an operational flight time of around an hour, even in conditions where GPS signals may be unreliable. The Thor drone, weighing 15 kilograms (roughly 33 pounds), is designed to carry small munitions and can operate for about 70 minutes when not heavily loaded. As part of the initial phase of the agreement, Albania is set to receive 10 of these drones, after which Elbit will assist in establishing a production facility in the northern region of the country.

In addition to this new partnership, Albania has been receiving military support from various nations over the years to strengthen its defense capabilities. The United States has played a significant role by providing armored vehicles, small arms, and military training, alongside financial and advisory assistance aimed at helping Tirana meet NATO standards.

European allies have also been instrumental in enhancing Albania’s military resources. Italy has contributed patrol boats and naval equipment, while Germany has supplied communication systems and additional logistical support. Furthermore, Turkey has reportedly provided drones and has been involved in training Albanian forces, particularly in mechanized infantry operations.

The move to bolster its military arsenal and develop a domestic defense industry reflects Albania’s commitment to enhancing its national security and fulfilling its obligations as a NATO member.
