Canberra has made a significant investment of over 300 million Australian dollars (approximately $199.8 million) in a new initiative known as the Future Air Mission Training System (F-AMTS). This ambitious project aims to modernize and expand the training framework for mission aircrews within the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
In partnership with CAE Australia, the F-AMTS is designed to increase aircrew training capacity by as much as 70 percent. The project will leverage advanced simulation technologies, updated curriculum, and integrated hands-on training to reflect real-world operational scenarios. This comprehensive approach combines classroom learning with high-fidelity simulators, synthetic training environments, and airborne training to ensure that personnel are fully prepared for their missions.
The F-AMTS is set to play a critical role in providing both initial and specialized training for teams involved with cutting-edge platforms such as the MC-55A Peregrine spy plane and the MQ-4C Triton high-altitude drone. CAE has confirmed that various positions, including Airborne Electronics Analysts, Air Battle Managers, Air Mobility Officers, Weapon Systems Officers, and Electronic Warfare Officers, will benefit from this new training capability.
Key provisions of the agreement include the establishment of facilities for the existing Air Mission Training School located at RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria, where the program is projected to commence in 2026. The first graduates from the F-AMTS initiative are anticipated in 2028.
France Hébert, president of defense and security at CAE Canada and International, emphasized the importance of an adaptable training partner in today’s dynamic defense landscape. He stated, “Achieving mission readiness for today’s rapidly evolving defense and security landscape requires a training partner who deeply understands the complexity and challenges faced in operations.” He underscored that CAE’s world-class, scalable, and cost-effective training solutions would equip aviators with the necessary skills and confidence to meet operational demands.
The F-AMTS investment also signifies a commitment to strengthening domestic industry, with the initiative expected to create approximately 140 jobs during its acquisition phase and 50 ongoing positions for sustainment. Furthermore, the 10-year agreement entails collaborative efforts with local companies like Nova Systems, Adacel, DXC Technology, Milskil, MMCLD, Airflite, and Seeing Machines for shipments and installations related to the system.
Australian Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy remarked on the transformative nature of this investment, stating, “The Albanese Government is revolutionising air mission training so that more Defence personnel are trained and ready for the challenges of tomorrow.” He highlighted that this commitment serves to build sovereign capabilities, support Australia’s defense industry, and create job opportunities for Australian workers.
