In a significant development for military technology, BAE Systems Hägglunds has entered into a strategic partnership with Rheinmetall to equip the new CV90120 armored vehicle with the advanced L44A1 120-millimeter low-recoil cannon. This collaboration signifies a critical enhancement in the capabilities of light armor platforms, effectively bridging the gap between infantry fighting vehicles and main battle tanks.
The CV90120 is a modern light tank variant of BAE Systems’ highly regarded Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) infantry fighting vehicle, which is built on the robust MkIV chassis. The design comes with substantial upgrades, including a new engine for improved performance, reinforced transmission for increased durability, and advanced digital systems. Additionally, the CV90120 has integrated active protection systems designed to defend against incoming threats, enhancing the vehicle’s survivability on the battlefield.
One of the notable advantages of this modernized design is its compatibility with allied forces currently operating CV90s. This allows countries to streamline training, logistics, and spare parts management, making operations more efficient and cohesive among NATO partners.
Rheinmetall’s L44A1 cannon is an upgraded iteration of the well-established 120-millimeter smoothbore gun, which has been utilized on heavy platforms such as the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams tanks. Measuring approximately 5 meters (16 feet) in length, the “A1” version is equipped with recoil-reduction features, including a muzzle brake. This innovation allows the cannon to be mounted on lighter tracked vehicles without sacrificing performance, a crucial factor for the CV90120’s operational flexibility.
The L44A1 remains compatible with all NATO-standard 120-millimeter ammunition, including versatile options such as programmable high-explosive rounds and enhanced kinetic-energy projectiles, further boosting the vehicle’s combat effectiveness.
Both companies have expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing that their combined expertise aims to position the CV90120 as a formidable player on modern battlefields. Tarkan Turkcan, CV90 platform director at BAE Systems Hägglunds, commented on the collaboration, stating, “Our customers will benefit from the combined expertise and resources of our two companies, resulting in a solution that offers enhanced firepower, protection, and mobility — a winning combination on the modern battlefield.”
To date, BAE Systems has produced more than 1,400 CV90 vehicles in 17 different configurations for 10 European countries, many of which have participated in United Nations and NATO missions, showcasing the proven track record and versatility of the platform. As nations continue to face evolving threats, the introduction of the CV90120 and its integration with advanced armament ensures that armed forces are better equipped to meet future challenges.
