In a notable security incident, a Bangladeshi national, Ashraful Alam, claiming to be a former intelligence agent, has been arrested near the Bengdubi Army Cantonment in Bagdogra, sparking fears of potential cross-border espionage.
Alam, hailing from the Rangpur district in Bangladesh, was reported by local residents for suspicious behavior in the MM Terai area, which is adjacent to the sensitive military zone. Acting swiftly on the information received, personnel from the 5th FOD unit of the Indian Army apprehended him and subsequently handed him over to Bagdogra Police for further investigation.
During initial questioning, Alam asserted that he had previously served in the Bangladeshi intelligence services. Authorities believe he had crossed into India illegitimately six months ago, reportedly traversing the river border near Rajshahi. Notably, he did not possess any form of identification at the time of his arrest.
Police have registered a case against Alam and are planning to present him before the Siliguri court. A request for police remand is expected to be submitted, which aims to facilitate deeper interrogation regarding his activities and associations in India.
Investigators are currently delving into Alam’s movements over the past few months, particularly focusing on his proximity to military zones and any contacts he may have established while in India. This incident arises amidst heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, where increased military operations and drone incursions have prompted heightened vigilance along borders. Intelligence agencies are examining whether Alam’s presence was a solitary act or part of a more extensive intelligence operation.
In response to the situation, security measures in the area have been intensified, and central intelligence officials have been informed about the case. The specifics surrounding Alam’s motives in India remain elusive, but the authorities are treating the situation as a serious national security issue.
