In a significant advancement for infantry capabilities, the US Army has selected Barrett Firearms and MARS Inc. to develop a next-generation precision grenade launcher, successfully outmatching competitor FN Herstal. This collaboration introduces a 30mm grenade rifle system designed for rapid and accurate engagements with enemy forces as well as drones at close range.
The newly proposed system is characterized as portable, semi-automatic, and magazine-fed, featuring an integrated fire control system to enhance operational efficiency. While full specifications remain confidential, it is believed the weapon draws inspiration from the Squad Support Rifle, which is known to utilize 30×42mm grenades. If the design principles are consistent, the launcher is anticipated to include a five-round magazine, weigh approximately 6.3 kilograms (14 pounds), and have an effective range of up to 500 meters (1,640 feet).
The Barrett and MARS partnership has also been awarded $300,000 to move forward in the program’s third phase, which emphasizes a proof-of-concept demonstration of their innovative offering. Additionally, Barrett Firearms has joined forces with AMTEC Corp. to develop a comprehensive line of 30mm munitions tailored for the new shoulder-fired platform. The munitions range includes grenades equipped with both proximity and contact fuses, plus specialized rounds for close-quarters combat.
Notably, AMTEC has engineered airburst grenades with programmable fuses to enhance their effectiveness against adversaries concealed behind cover, representing a critical advancement in battlefield technology. According to Barrett Firearms, this new ammunition family encompasses a full spectrum of capabilities aligned with the US Army’s mission to achieve superiority in modern combat scenarios.
This landmark contract stems from the Army’s “xTechSoldier Lethality” competition, which seeks cutting-edge solutions to boost soldier effectiveness. Winning teams may secure up to $2 million in subsequent contracts, contingent on their continued success throughout the development process. The competition commenced in June 2023, where initial submissions received $15,000 each, before narrowing down to finalists through a virtual pitch session.
Ryan Krantz, Barrett’s Vice President of Business Development and Sales, emphasized that this award reflects both the company’s technical expertise and the strength of collaborative innovation. He expressed pride in partnering with the US Army to pioneer advancements in soldier lethality, marking a substantial leap forward in infantry warfare capabilities.
