In a significant move to bolster its air defense capabilities, the Belgian government has proposed the acquisition of 10 National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) batteries from the Norwegian defense manufacturer Kongsberg. This procurement would occur through the Netherlands, marking a collaborative approach reminiscent of previous joint acquisitions, such as the purchase of frigates.
The estimated value of the deal is around 2.5 billion euros (approximately $2.87 billion), making it potentially the largest defense procurement in Belgium since a 2018 deal for 34 F-35 fighter jets valued at $6.53 billion. The NASAMS batteries, with four launchers each, are designed to enhance Belgium’s air defense capabilities amidst growing concerns over aerial threats.
Jointly developed by Kongsberg and the American company Raytheon, the NASAMS is a ground-based air defense system capable of targeting a range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. The system employs AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles as its interceptors, supported by advanced technology such as the Raytheon AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel active 3D radar and passive electro-optical and infrared sensors.
Belgium’s move to acquire these systems comes in response to its current limitations in air defense, primarily relying on its F-16s for such roles. The strategic importance of Belgium, particularly as a potential logistics hub in the event of a major conflict involving Western and Russian forces, has underscored the necessity for enhanced defenses against potential air attacks. Notably, the port of Antwerp is a critical supply and logistics center for transatlantic operations.
In addition to the NASAMS, Belgian defense officials have indicated the need for procuring a long-range air defense system, with options like the SAMP/T NG (new generation) and the Patriot missile systems being evaluated. Neighboring Luxembourg is also reportedly considering joining Belgium and the Netherlands in this defense enhancement initiative, reflecting a broader regional effort to strengthen air defense amid increasing geopolitical tensions.
