BSF Sends 160-Person Contingent for UN Mission in Congo

A significant milestone in international peacekeeping was marked today as a 160-member contingent from the Border Security Force (BSF) was ceremonially flagged off for deployment under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The event took place at the BSF headquarters on Lodhi Road and was led by Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary.

This unit, designated as the 18th BSF Contingent (IFPU-II), is preparing to support stabilization efforts in Beni, a region in eastern Congo that has been plagued by ongoing armed conflict, militia violence, and mass displacement. The local population has been severely affected, with over seven million individuals uprooted due to persistent clashes involving the M23 militia and military operations conducted by Rwandan and Congolese forces.

During the ceremony, DG Chawdhary emphasized India’s longstanding commitment to international peacekeeping efforts. He praised the inclusion of 25 women personnel in the contingent, reflecting India’s dedication to the United Nations’ goals for gender-inclusive peacekeeping. Chawdhary observed that diverse teams not only strengthen community relations but also enhance mission effectiveness, particularly in complex environments.

The newly appointed DG, who is a 1990-batch IPS officer and took on the leadership of the BSF in August 2024, underscored the importance of the mission’s objectives in fostering peace in the region.

India’s history of contributing to UN peacekeeping dates back to 1950, with its first mission to Congo initiated in 1960. To date, more than 250,000 Indian troops have actively participated in various UN missions around the world. The nation has also set pioneering standards in peacekeeping, such as the deployment of the world’s first all-women Formed Police Unit to Liberia in 2007, and has been involved in significant operations during historical conflicts, including the Korean War and post-conflict efforts in Cambodia.

As this latest BSF unit embarks on its mission, it carries forward a proud legacy defined by courage, discipline, and a steadfast commitment to promoting peace in some of the world’s most challenging regions.
