A ceasefire agreement intended to ease tensions between India and Pakistan has collapsed just hours after being heralded as a diplomatic breakthrough. The ceasefire, which was expected to take effect at 5 PM IST, has triggered a swift return to hostilities, marking a significant resurgence of military tensions in South Asia.
The agreement, reportedly facilitated by U.S. mediation, followed a series of violent clashes and a notable military response from India, specifically Operation Sindoor, launched in retaliation for a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, including tourists.
Initial hopes for peace quickly faded as reports surfaced of drone incursions and renewed shelling from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir. Alarms sounded in cities including Srinagar and Jammu, with explosions reported near civilian areas. Although Indian anti-drone units managed to neutralize several drones in the Naushera and Mendhar sectors, sporadic artillery fire persisted throughout the evening.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump had previously asserted that the ceasefire exemplified successful American diplomacy, a claim that now appears undermined by renewed hostilities.
The escalation not only jeopardizes upcoming peace talks scheduled for May 12 but also deepens the prevailing distrust between the two nations. Pakistan’s Defense Ministry accused India of provocation, vowing to respond decisively to any aggression.
In response to the renewed tensions, India has heightened military readiness, deploying reinforcements to the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC). Military convoys and surveillance units have been observed mobilizing across northern districts, underscoring the precarious situation.
