The lander and rover configuration will be carried by the propulsion module until they reach 100 km lunar orbit. It carries a payload called Spectro-Polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth that studies spectral and polarimetric observations of Earth from lunar orbit. Payloads on the lander, rover, and propulsion module will conduct tests that will provide scientists with new insights into the properties of Earth’s lone natural satellite.

Radio Anatomy of Moon Bound Hypersensitive Ionosphere and Atmosphere (RAMBHA), Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE), Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA), and the LASER Retroreflector Array (LRA) will be among the four payloads aboard the lander. The Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and the LASER-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) will be aboard the six-wheeled rover. In addition to this, the propulsion module will carry one payload, the Spectro-polarimetry of HAbitable Planet Earth (SHAPE).

ISRO Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) intends to keep the names of the Chandrayaan-2 lander and rover for their Chandrayaan-3 counterparts. This means that the Chandrayaan-3 lander will be called ‘Vikram’ (after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space programme), and the rover will be called ‘Pragyan’. The ISRO had lost the Chandrayaan-2 lander-rover configuration and their cargo after ‘Vikram’ crashed on the lunar surface while attempting a soft landing.
