A CRPF havildar posted in Manipur has been accused of killing his wife in Rohtak district, Haryana, after returning home on leave only two days earlier. Police have registered a murder case and continued their search for the accused, who was still absconding at the time of the reports.
What police say happened
The accused has been identified as Sombir, also referred to as Sombeer, son of Sube Singh. The victim was his wife, Manisha, aged 36 in one report and 37 in another. She was a resident of Bahu Akbarpur village in Rohtak district, and the couple had married in 2009. They had two daughters, Anisha, 16, and Chaksu, around 14, and no son.
According to the accounts cited, Sombir returned to the village on 21 October without informing his wife, apparently to surprise her. He allegedly hid in a village street before Manisha noticed him and asked their daughter to call him home. The situation then escalated on Friday evening, 23 October 2026, into a domestic dispute that ended in violence.
Police accounts place the incident at around 6:45 pm. Sombir is alleged to have attacked Manisha with a knife or another sharp-edged weapon. Most reports say she suffered severe neck injuries, while one account mentions a stab wound to the right side of the abdomen. Despite the injuries and heavy bleeding, she reportedly managed to reach neighbours for help before being taken to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak, where she died. The attack is said to have taken place at or near an under-construction house in the village.
Investigation and police response
After the attack, Sombir fled the scene and remained untraced. Bahu Akbarpur police, led by station in-charge Jasbir, also referred to as Jasbir Singh, reached the spot, secured the body, called in a Forensic Science Laboratory team to collect evidence, and registered a murder case. A post-mortem examination was conducted on Saturday. In some reports, DSP Tanuj Sharma has also been linked with the investigation.
Police are examining the sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the killing, including allegations of long-standing domestic harassment. As of 24 October 2026, no update on an arrest was available in the reports.
Allegations raised by the family
Manisha’s brother, Narender, also referred to as Narendra, has alleged that she faced sustained harassment because the couple had only daughters. He has claimed that Sombir’s mother, Kamlesh, taunted Manisha for not bearing a son and spoke about arranging a second marriage for Sombir. He further alleged that disputes involving Kamlesh and Sombir’s younger brother, Monu, forced Manisha to live at her parental home for nearly a year. According to him, she later returned after assurances that the harassment would stop, but the problems continued and she eventually began living separately with her daughters in rented accommodation. Narender has named Sombir, Kamlesh and Monu in his police complaint.
Narender also alleged that during a telephone conversation on Friday evening, Sombir threatened Manisha, saying words to the effect of, “Open the door. I will kill you today.” He said Anisha answered the call and that the threat was audible in the background. Narender rushed to the village after learning of the call, but found the house locked and later learned that Manisha had died at PGIMS.
Claim about reward for operation in Manipur
Narender further claimed that Sombir had been honoured on Independence Day, 15 August, for killing four militants during an operation in Manipur. This claim has not been independently confirmed by the CRPF or local police. Earlier reporting also noted that the couple frequently argued.
The village has been described in local reporting as having many residents serving in the armed forces. The account is based on contemporaneous reporting by The Statesman, Dainik Tribune, Dainik Bhaskar, Amar Ujala and other local sources. Early details, including the exact nature of the injuries, vary slightly across reports pending full forensic findings.
