Current Affairs 01 & 02 April 2025

Operation Brahma

  •  The government of India has launched Operation Brahma to help the earthquake-hit victims in Myanmar. A 7.7 magnitude quake hit Myanmar on 28 March 2025, killing at least 1000 people. India, under its Neighbourhood First policy and its policy of being the first responder in providing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) has launched Operation Brahma.

  • Two Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft carrying relief material for the quake-hit Myanmar took off from Hindon Air Force Station, Uttar Pradesh. The plane carried the first tranche of 15 tonnes of urgent humanitarian aid landed at the Yangon airport of Myanmar.
  • A search-and-rescue team and a medical team have also been sent to Myanmar. The relief package includes essential supplies such as tents, blankets, sleeping bags,crucial medical supplies, including paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages etc.

Spacex Launches Historic “Fram2” Mission

  • SpaceX launched “Fram2,” the first human spaceflight to travel directly over Earth’s North and South Poles, on a privately funded mission. The mission includes groundbreaking experiments, such as taking the first X-ray in space and studying mushroom growth in microgravity.

  • The crew consists of mission commander Chun Wang (China/Malta), vehicle commander Jannicke Mikkelsen (Norway), mission pilot Rabea Rogge (Germany), and mission specialist Eric Philips (Australia). Named after the 19th-century Norwegian exploration ship “Fram,” the mission aims to gather new data to advance long-term space exploration.

“Trade Watch Quarterly”

  • The second edition of Trade Watch Quarterly for Q2 of the financial year 2024-25 (July to September) was officially released in New Delhi by Dr Arvind Virmani, Member of NITI Aayog.
  • Published by NITI Aayog, the report offers a comprehensive overview of India’s trade performance, analysing global demand-supply trends, sector-specific developments, and emerging opportunities in the international trade landscape.

  • During Q2 FY’25, India recorded a steady trade growth of 5.67 per cent in the April–September 2024 period compared to the same timeframe in 2023. Notably, copper entered the top ten import categories, with a significant 28 per cent year-on-year surge, primarily driven by increased infrastructure demand. While export composition remained largely consistent with the previous quarter, electrical machinery and nuclear reactors showed notable year-on-year growth.

  • In contrast, mineral fuels and iron & steel experienced declines. North America and the European Union accounted for nearly 40 per cent of India’s exports, while Northeast and West Asia continued as major import partners. This edition places special emphasis on the textile sector, a vital contributor to India’s industrial output, employment generation, and export earnings.

  • India ranks among the top ten textile exporters globally, holding a 4 per cent share in international trade. The country maintains a competitive edge in natural fibre-based textiles, with cotton and carpets representing about 70 per cent of its textile exports.

52 Years Of Project Tiger

  • India proudly commemorates 52 years of Project Tiger, a pioneering initiative that transformed the landscape of wildlife conservation. On this day in 1973, the Government of India launched Project Tiger to protect the country’s dwindling tiger population.

  • With a legacy of resilience and determination, the project has played a crucial role in increasing tiger populations and preserving their natural habitats.Over five decades, the initiative has grown into one of the world’s most successful wildlife conservation programs.
  • From just 1,411 tigers in 2006, India’s wild tiger population surged to 3,682 in 2022, making it home to nearly 75 per cent of the world’s wild tigers. The country now has 57 tiger reserves, covering approximately 83,000 sq km of forest land.

  • Tamil Nadu alone houses five tiger reserves spread across 6,200 sq km, sheltering 306 tigers. A major milestone came when India achieved its target of doubling tiger numbers, four years ahead of schedule of ‘St. The Petersburg Declaration on Tiger Conservation was held in Russia.
  • In 2023, the country further cemented its leadership in conservation by launching the International Big Cats Alliance to protect big cats worldwide. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) is a statutory body of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, which plays a key role in the ‘PROJECT TIGER.
  • As India celebrates 52 years of Project Tiger, it stands as a global inspiration in wildlife conservation, proving that dedicated efforts can reverse species decline and create a thriving ecosystem for future generations

NITI NCAER States Economic Forum Portal

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will launch NITI NCAER States Economic Forum portal in New Delhi. NITI Aayog, in collaboration with the National Council of Applied Economic Research NCAER has developed the portal which is a comprehensive repository of data on social, economic and fiscal parameters, research reports, papers, and expert commentary on State Finances for a period of about 30 years from 1990-91 to 2022-23.

  • The portal has four main components, State Reports, Data Repository, State Fiscal and Economic Dashboard and Research and Commentary. The portal will facilitate an understanding of macro, fiscal, demographic and socio-economic trends easily accessible data and user-friendly format and will also address the ongoing need for consolidated sectoral data in one place.

Cory Booker

  • U.S. Senator Cory Booker has made history, delivering the longest continuous speech in Senate history, an astonishing 25 hours and 5 minutes. The New Jersey Democrat took the floor at 7 PM on Monday and spoke uninterrupted until after 8 PM the following day, calling attention to what he described as a crisis in American democracy under President Donald Trump.

  • Booker shattered the previous record of 24 hours and 18 minutes, set in 1957 by segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond in a failed attempt to block the Civil Rights Act. Unlike Thurmond, who fought against progress, Booker used his marathon speech to warn against the growing consolidation of power and rally support for democratic institutions.

Shirley Botchwey

  • Shirley Botchwey will assume office as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. With this, she will become the first woman from Africa to hold this office. Ms. Botchwey has 20 years of leadership experience in diplomacy, international relations, governance, and public service.

  • She previously served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration from January 2017 to January 2024 and was also a member of Ghana’s National Security Council.
  • The Secretary-General is nominated by Commonwealth leaders and can serve a maximum of two terms of four years each. The Commonwealth Secretary-General is responsible for promoting and protecting the Commonwealth’s values, representing the Commonwealth publicly and the management of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Jhajjar-Bachauli Wildlife Sanctuary for Leopard safari

  • Punjab government will develop the Jhajjar-Bachauli Wildlife Sanctuary as a leopard safari destination to promote eco-tourism in the state.
  • Punjab Government will develop the wildlife sanctuary in the Sri Anandpur Sahib as the state’s first wildlife sanctuary of the state where the tourist will view the wildlife in its natural habitat.

  • The state government has allocated Rs 10 crore for the Nangal project in its 2025-26 budget to develop the tourist infrastructure in the region.
  • The Jhajjar- Bachauli Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a protected sanctuary by the Punjab government in 1998 under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.

Indian Equestrian Niharika Singhania

  • In a remarkable display of skill and dedication, young Indian equestrian player Niharika Singhania has clinched first position in the prestigious Azelhof CSI Lier equestrian competition held in Belgium.
  • Competing against international participants, Niharika demonstrated exceptional talent and composure to bring home gold. Niharika participated in the Two Phases special event, riding on Hotese Charboniere. She finished the event with 40.72 and 40.34 penalty points.
