Indo Pacific Economic Framework

  • India has been elected as Vice Chair of the Supply Chain Council. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry termed it a significant milestone for the country.
  • The Ministry said that India and 13 other Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) partners have established three supply chain bodies under the landmark Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity Agreement relating to supply chain resilience.

  • Ministry said that the USA has been elected as Chair of the Supply Chain Council. It added that Korea was elected as Chair and Japan as Vice Chair of the Crisis Response Network, while for the Labour Rights Advisory Board, the USA is Chair and Vice Chair is from Fiji.
  • Ministry said that through the inaugural meetings, 14 IPEF partners reaffirmed their commitments and collective resolve to facilitate closer cooperation to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of critical supply chains. During the meetings, each of the three supply chain bodies elected a Chair and Vice Chair, who will serve for a term of two years.

  • Supply Chain Resilience is a pillar out of four pillars under the IPEF framework. IPEF aims to establish “high-standard commitments” in four pillars:
  • (1) Connected Economy (selected trade issues)
  • (2) Resilient Economy (supply chains)
  • (3) Clean Economy (clean energy, decarbonization, infrastructure)
  • (4) Fair Economy (tax, anti-corruption issues).
  • IPEF was launched in May 2022 in Tokyo, Japan, comprising 14 countries. 14 IPEF partners – Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the United States, and Viet Nam .
  • The IPEF seeks to strengthen economic engagement and cooperation among partner countries to advance growth, economic stability, and prosperity in the region. India signed a supply chain resilience agreement in November 2023. The agreement was ratified in February this year and has been in force since then.

‘India@100’

  • Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal today launched the book titled ‘India@100: Envisioning Tomorrow’s Economic Powerhouse’ authored by Prof. K V Subramanian in New Delhi.
  • Addressing the launch event, Mr Goyal said that India can achieve the target of Viksit Bharat with the collective efforts of 1.4 billion citizens.
  • He has expressed confidence that India will become a developed nation by 2047 in all sectors, including infrastructure, employment generation, tourism, manufacturing, shipping, and technology.

UNESCO’s 46th World Heritage Committee Session

  • UNESCO’s 46th World Heritage Committee Session to inscribe global landmarks on the World Heritage List concluded in New Delhi. This year, India not only hosted the annual committee but also chaired it. UNESCO inscribed 24 new landmark sites and two major boundary modifications into its World Heritage List. India’s very own Moidams of Assam.

Preeti Sudan

  • Former Union Health Secretary and 1983-batch IAS officer Preeti Sudan has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). President Droupadi Murmu has approved the appointment of Ms. Sudan. She will take charge on 1st August. Ms Sudan will succeed Dr. Manoj Soni, who resigned earlier this month before the end of his tenure.

Vietnamese PM Pham Minh Chinh

  • Prime Minister of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh has arrived in New Delhi for a three-day state visit to India. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including several ministers, deputy ministers, and business leaders.
  • Extending a warm welcome to the visiting dignitary, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X that Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita received him at the airport.

  • Mr Jaiswal highlighted India’s deep civilizational ties and longstanding friendship with Vietnam adding that Prime Minister Chinh’s visit will further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
  • Prime Minister Chinh is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will host a luncheon in his honour. Prime Minister Chinh will also meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will also call on the visiting Prime Minister.
  • India and Vietnam’s long-standing historical and civilizational ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Vietnam in 2016.
  • The Ministry emphasized that India views Vietnam as a key pillar of its Act East Policy and an important partner in its Indo-Pacific vision.

56th International Chemistry Olympiad

  • In the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad, the Indian team won one Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medal.
  • The Competition was held in Riyadh city of Saudi Arabia.

  • Devesh Bhaiyya from the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra won gold while Mumbai’s Avanish Bansal and Hyderabad’s Harshin Posina grabbed silver medals. Kashyap Khandelwal from Mumbai brought a bronze medal.
  • Prof. Gulshanara Shaikh and Dr. Shraddha Tiwari were the guides of the Indian team. 327 students from 94 countries participated in the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad.

UN Listed Terrorist Groups

  • Quad Foreign Ministers have warned of terrorists using new technology and demanded international action against UN-listed terrorist groups including Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), as well as Al-Qa’ida and the Islamic State outfit.
  • In a joint statement after their meeting in Tokyo, the Quad ministers said that they are committed to working with international and regional partners to forestall threats posed by the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes.

  • External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Foreign Ministers Penny Wong of Australia and Yoko Kamikawa of Japan reiterated the call for concerted action against all UN-listed terrorist groups.
  • Recalling the 26/11 Mumbai and the 2016 Pathankot terrorist attacks, they called for bringing the perpetrators of these attacks to justice without delay.

NATS Portal 2.0

  • Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan launched the National Apprenticeship and Training Scheme 2.0 Portal and disbursed 100 crore rupees stipends to apprentices through the DBT mode in New Delhi.
  • These apprentices are undergoing training in various sectors like Information Technology, manufacturing, and automobile among others.

  • This initiative aligns with the Government’s focus on skilling and the employability of youth.
  • NATS Portal 2.0 is a significant effort to democratise apprenticeship, bridge the skills gap, fulfil youth aspirations and make them future-ready.
  • Minister highlighted that this year’s budget also lays great emphasis on boosting skilling and employment.
  • Minister appealed to all educational institutions and industries to join NATS 2.0 portal.
  • UGC chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar appreciated the government’s initiatives. He said that this portal is the need of the hour which will help youth to support the country’s growth.

Madras-Colombo Regatta

  • Sri Lanka’s Colombo is set to host the 83rd edition of the prestigious Madras-Colombo Regatta.
  • This oldest sporting competition between India and Sri Lanka is the longest-running continuous regatta between the two countries, celebrating decades of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
  • Madras Boat Club and the Colombo Rowing Club participants will showcase their rowing prowess.

  • The event will draw a large audience, including dignitaries, sports enthusiasts, and club members.
  • The regatta will feature 12 thrilling events, including eight men’s and four women’s competitions.
  • The coveted Deepam Trophy will be awarded to the overall Men’s category winners, while the Adyar Trophy will go to the Women’s champions.
  • The highlight of the regatta, the Boat Race Trophy will be presented to the winners of the men’s senior fours. In 2023, The Regatta was hosted at the Madras Boat Club in Chennai.

Jiya Rai

  • Para swimmer Jiya Rai has become the world’s youngest and fastest female para swimmer to swim solo across the English Channel successfully.
  • The 16-year-old covered the 34 km stretch, from Abbots Cliff in England to Pointe de la Courte-Dune in France, in 17 hours and 25 minutes.

  • She is an international open water para swimmer with a world record in open water swimming.
  • Despite having a disability, she has many inspiring achievements to her credit, including swimming across Palk Bay earlier.
  • Jiya Rai is a recipient of many international and national awards including the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMB) – 2022 the highest award for citizens below 18 years of Age. She has dedicated her exceptional conquest of the English Channel to raising awareness about autism.
