2nd October Celebrated As

  • 2nd October 2023 marks the 119th birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, India’s second Prime Minister & Mahatma Gandhi jayanti this year we will be celebrating Bapu’s 154th birth anniversary.
  • Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti holds special significance as we remember the life and legacy of the man who served as India’s second Prime Minister. Lal Bahadur Shastri, born on October 2, 1904, in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh, remains an enduring symbol of selfless service and dedication to the nation.
  • Every year, October 2 is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti in India. The day marks the birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
  • This day is a tribute to the life and principles of a man who dedicated his existence to India’s struggle for independence and left an indelible mark on the world with his unwavering commitment to truth and non-violence.

Saugata Gupta

  • Saugata Gupta, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Marico Ltd, has been appointed new Chairman of the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), at the board meeting of the self-regulatory body.
  • Gupta’s association with ASCI spans several years, including two years on the Board of Governors and four years as a special invitee on the Board of Governors.
  • The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) is a voluntary self-regulatory organization of the advertising industry in India. Established in 1985, ASCI is registered as a non-profit company under section 25 of the Company Act.

Bihar to Establish Second Tiger Reserve

2023 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in Mathematics

  • Mathematician Ruixiang Zhang, an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious 2023 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize.
  • This award recognizes his remarkable contributions to the field of mathematics. The prize, which includes a cash award of $10,000.

  • It will be presented during an international conference in Number Theory, held in the hometown of the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, at SASTRA University in Kumbakonam Tamil Nadu.

Law Commission Report

  • 22nd Law Commission has recommended the government to retain the existing age of consent under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
  • The Commission noted that reducing it might have damaging effects on fighting child marriage and child trafficking.

  • The current age of consent in India is 18 years. It also said that certain amendments need to be brought in the POCSO Act to remedy the situation in cases where there is tacit approval in fact though not consent in law on part of the child aged between 16 to 18 years.
  • It opined that such cases do not merit to be dealt with the same severity as the cases that were ideally imagined to fall under the POCSO Act.
  • The Commission submitted the Report titled “Age of Consent under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012” to the Law Ministry.

Country’s First Cartography Museum

  • The Minister of Tourism and Culture of Uttarakhand, Satpal Maharaj, inaugurated the George Everest Cartography Museum in the picturesque town of Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
  • Cartography is about exploring and making maps.

National Turmeric Board

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced National Turmeric Board and Sammakka Sarakka Tribal University for Telangana.
  • The board will extend help to all turmeric farmers on all aspects of Turmeric crop.
  • Also announced 900 crore rupees to the Tribal University.
  • Stating that the infrastructure development will augment economic activity in the region, he said these infrastructure and developmental projects will increase employment opportunities and improve the lives of people.
  • Referring to the Food processing mega park, he said it especially helps people of especially of Hanumkonda, Warangal, Khammam, and  Mahabubnagar districts.
  • He also dedicated New Railway line between Jakler-Krishna’ built on Munirabad-Mahabubnagar section and Hassan-Charlapally LPG pipeline project of HPCL at a cost of 2 thousand 661 crore rupees.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated and extended greetings to Dr Mohamed Muizzu on being elected as President of the Maldives.
  • In a social media post, the Prime Minister said that India remains committed to strengthening the time-tested India-Maldives bilateral relationship and enhancing our overall cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

Indian men’s football team wins SAFF

  • In Football, India won the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Under-19 Championship after defeating Pakistan 3-0 in a dominating display in the finals at the Dashrath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu this evening.
  • Manglenthang Kipgen and Gwgwmsar Goyary scored for India.
  • Pakistan possessed no threat to the well-composed Indian side, who dominated the game from the start.
  • The first half ended goalless courtesy of an excellent defensive display by the Green Shirts but they could not keep up the same intensity throughout as India opened their account in the 64th minute.
  • The game went in India’s favour as they were up by three goals.

ICC announces official mascots

  • After fans around the globe participated in voting, the names of the two official ICC mascots have been revealed, ahead of the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. The ICC has announced that ‘Blaze’ and ‘Tonk’ have been unanimously chosen as the names of the mascot duo.
  • The two mascots will be seen in World Cup matches around all the venues, engaging and interacting with fans in attendance and adding to the excitement of the showpiece event.
  • ‘Blaze’ is a female mascot, bowling at rapid pace, leaving batters in sheer awe. She is adorned with a belt carrying six power cricket orbs, each meticulously prepared for various game-changing tactics.
  • ‘Tonk’ is a male mascot, with icy-cool composure, making him a batting champion. Tonk has an electromagnetic bat and versatile shot repertoire, lighting up the grandest stage.

CRPF Women Bikers To Celebrate Women Power

  • The Central Reserve Police Force, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, is organizing a cross-country bike expedition with “Yashaswini” a group of CRPF women bikers to celebrate women power or Nari Shakti of the country.

  • A total of 150 women CRPF officers, divided into three teams, will embark on a cross-country rally.
  • Riding 75 Royal Enfield (350cc) motorbikes, these teams will start their journeys from the Northern (Srinagar), Eastern (Shillong), and Southern (Kanyakumari) regions of India.
  • They will all converge at the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar(Kevadia), Gujarat for the grand finale scheduled to take place on the 31st of October, 2023.
  • The rally will cover approximately 10,000 km, passing through 15 states and 2 Union Territories.
  • Throughout their respective journeys, in many districts en route various events have been planned, including interactions with the target groups of “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” (BBBP) like school children and college girls, women self-help groups, cadets of the NCC, children of CCIs, NYKS members, adolescent girls & boys, anganwadi workers etc. and felicitation of BBBP Champions.
  • In addition to promoting the Force’s message of “Desh Ke Hum Hain Rakshak“, the women bikers have also incorporated the social message of “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao”, into their campaign. They would be proudly displaying the BBBP logo on their uniforms and banners, thereby endorsing the cause throughout the country.

Asian Games

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the Mixed Doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale on winning the Gold medal in Tennis Mixed Doubles event at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou.
  • Also congratulated the Squash Men’s Team of Saurav Ghosal, Abhay Singh, Harinder Sandhu, and Mahesh Mangaokar on winning the Gold medal at the Asian Games.
  • The Indian contingent bagged 42 medals- 11 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze so far. The country currently stands at the 4th position on the leaderboard.
  • The latest medal was bagged by ace Indian shooter Kynan Darius Chenai in the men’s individual trap final. In an exciting game, Chenai stayed level-headed and managed to score 32 points, securing bronze for the country.

  • Earlier in the day, Chenai, Joravar Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Tondaiman scored 361 points in the men’s team trap event and won the gold medal.
  • India also won the silver medal in the women’s trap team event, courtesy of Rajeshwari Kumari, Manisha Keer and Preeti Rajak. With this, India’s shooting campaign concluded today. The country gained a record-breaking 22 medals in shooting, the most by Indian shooters in an Asian Games edition.
  •  In the women’s individual golf event, Aditi Ashok bagged the silver medal. She is the first-ever Indian women golfer to win a medal at the Asian Games.
  • Parveen Hooda beat Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova 5:0 on points in the women’s 57kg quarter-final.
  • The victory assured Parveen a medal at Hangzhou while India secured an Olympic quota in the category for Paris 2024.
