Lead IT 2.0

PM Modi launches LeadIT 2.0, prioritizing inclusive industry transition.
The initiative aims to co-develop low-carbon tech and offer financial aid to emerging economies.
On the sidelines of the 28th edition of the climate change conference, COP28, taking place in Dubai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled LeadIT 2.0.

The initiative, with a primary focus on an inclusive and just industry transition, aims to facilitate the co-development and transfer of low-carbon technology while providing financial assistance to emerging economies.
The initiative seeks to bridge the technological gap by promoting cooperation between nations for the development and transfer of low-carbon technologies.
The focus on inclusivity underscores the importance of ensuring that emerging economies have access to sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies.

COP28 – 5 Billion Dollars For Climate Action

The ‘Business & Philanthropy Climate Forum’ at COP28 witnessed a historic collaboration, as Green Climate Fund, Allied Climate Partners, and Allianz Global Investors pledged 5 billion dollars to advance climate and nature action.
The forum, a first-of-its-kind private-sector engagement initiative within the COP program, brought together over 1,300 global business leaders and philanthropists, amplifying the private sector’s call for inclusion in the COP process.
COP28 President, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, emphasized the importance of leveraging private sector knowledge and resources to address climate finance challenges.

He stated that, to fix climate finance, the forum must leverage the knowledge, resources, and power of the private sector to ensure that necessary funding to those in need may be delivered, particularly in the global south.
COP28 is committed to directing capital from multiple sources to meet the trillions of dollars required to attack emissions so that a just, orderly transition can be achieved, he added.
Strategic partners for the forum included the Sustainable Markets Initiative, with additional support from International Finance Corporation (IFC), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), World Economic Forum (WEF), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, IDB Invest, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and XPRIZE.

ISRO Unveils XPoSat

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has recently announced its ambitious plan to launch the country’s first X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat).
This groundbreaking mission aims to delve into the polarization of intense X-Ray sources, introducing a novel dimension to X-Ray astronomy.

With a focus on simultaneous studies of temporal, spectral and polarization features, XoPoSat is poised to make significant contributions to our understanding of cosmic X-Ray sources.
The XPoSat spacecraft is designed for observation from Low Earth Orbit, with a non-sun synchronous orbit of approximately 650 km altitude and a low inclination of around six degrees.
The mission boasts two scientific payloads, allowing for comprehensive studies of bright X-Ray sources.
The spacecraft is expected to have a mission life of approximately five years, during which it will carry out observations during the eclipse period, when the spacecraft transits through Earth’s shadow.

White Lung Syndrome Outbreak

A new strain of bacterial pneumonia, commonly referred to as ‘White Lung Syndrome,’ is causing concern in various countries, including China, Denmark, the United States, and the Netherlands.
Primarily affecting children between the ages of three and eight, this illness is associated with lung damage visible as white patches on X-rays.

While the exact cause is under investigation, experts suggest that a combination of bacterial, viral, and environmental factors may contribute to White Lung Syndrome.
Viruses like influenza or COVID-19, bacterial infections (such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae), and environmental factors like inhaling silica dust can all potentially induce this syndrome.
The term ‘White Lung Syndrome’ encompasses various respiratory conditions, including: Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS, Pulmonary Alveolar Microlithiasis (PAM), Silicosis. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, coughing, and chest pain.

International Maritime Organisation

India was re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council with the highest tally at elections held at its Assembly in London for the 2024-25 biennium.
India’s re-election reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing India’s diverse contributions to global maritime operations.
The IMO is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping.
It was established following agreement at a UN conference held in Geneva in 1948 and came into existence 10 years later, meeting for the first time in 1958.

Headquartered in London, United Kingdom, IMO currently has 175 Member States and three Associate Members.
India joined the IMO in 1959 and the IMO currently lists India as among the 10 states with the largest interest in international seaborne trade.
The IMO’s primary purpose is to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping and its mandate includes –
Maritime safety, Environmental concerns, Legal matters, Technical co-operation, Maritime security and The efficiency of shipping.
In other words, its role is to create a level playing-field so that ship operators do not have to compromise on safety, security, and environmental performance in order to address financial difficulties.
This approach also encourages innovation and efficiency.

Global Drought Snapshot

The recently launched report by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) sheds light on the alarming impact of drought worldwide.
The Global Drought Snapshot, released at the beginning of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Dubai, exposes the devastating consequences of droughts on lives, economies, and various sectors.

Based on data reported by 101 Parties to the UNCCD, the report reveals that a staggering 1.84 billion people experienced the effects of drought.
Among them, 4.7% faced severe or extreme drought conditions. This stark reality underscores the widespread human toll of this natural hazard. Drought’s severity prompted emergency declarations in 23 countries.
Notably, Europe faced the highest number of declarations, with Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom declaring emergencies in 2023. Greece, Portugal, Romania, and Serbia declared emergencies in 2022. The spreading impact of drought reached many European countries, coinciding with their hottest summers.
