PM Narendra Modi In Brunei
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Bandar Seri Begawan on the first leg of his two-nation visit to Brunei and Singapore.
- This is the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei. The visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Brunei.
- Upon arrival, the Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial welcome and received by the Crown Prince and Senior Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei, Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.
- The first phase of Indians arriving in Brunei started with the discovery of oil in the 1920s. Currently, around 14 thousand Indians are residing in Brunei. Mr. Modi also visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Brunei.
- Earlier, in his departure statement, Mr. Modi expressed confidence that his visit to Brunei and Singapore will further strengthen India’s partnership with the two countries and the larger ASEAN region. He said both countries are important partners in India’s Act East Policy and the Indo-Pacific Vision.
Wokha SAATHI
- Wokha SAATHI (Smart AI-based Assistant for Timely Help & Interface) WhatsApp Chatbot, an innovative initiative of the Wokha District Administration of Nagaland has been awarded the prestigious Gold Award at National Awards for e-Governance Scheme 2023-2024.
- The award was presented at the 27th National Conference on e-Governance held in Mumbai, Maharashtra, by Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis.
- Under the initiative more than 40 services have been brought under one stop chat bot of the Wokha District Administration.
- The Wokha SAATHI WhatsApp Chatbot exemplifies the district’s dedication to enhancing citizen engagement and accessibility to government services through innovative technological solutions.
- This AI-based chatbot provides timely assistance and serves as a user-friendly interface for residents, ensuring they have easy access to vital information and services besides enabling proactive Information Education Campaign through a two way communication between the government and citizens on 24×7 basis.
World Skills Competition
- Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) organised a send-off ceremony in New Delhi for Indian contingents who will showcase their talent in the World Skills Competition in Lyon, France.
- The largest contingent, comprising 60 participants, will compete in 61 categories against the best from over 70 countries. The Indian contingents will leave for France on Friday, and competition will be held from 10 to 15 September at Euro-Expo Lyon.
Peace Pact In New Delhi
- Memorandum of Settlement will be signed among central and Tripura governments, representatives of National Liberation Front of Tripura, NLFT and All Tripura Tiger Force, ATTF in New Delhi in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
- Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha and senior officials of Home Ministry and Tripura government will also be present during the signing of the Memorandum of Settlement.
- Home Ministry has been working tirelessly to fulfill Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed Northeast which is free from extremism, violence and conflict.
- Centre has signed 12 important agreements to bring peace and prosperity in the Northeast. Three of these agreements relate to Tripura. Around ten thousand people have given up arms and joined mainstream due to signing of several agreements by Narendra Modi government.
Chief Science Advisers’ Roundtable 2024
- 2024 Edition of the Chief Science Advisers’ Roundtable -CSAR is scheduled to be organised at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France.
- This roundtable is co-organised by the Office of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Indian Government and the Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO.
- CSAR was conceptualised and launched as a Sherpa-track initiative during Indian G20 Presidency last year.
- Delegations of 28 countries and six international organisations will join the round-table.
- They will discuss on the theme ‘Fostering open science, bridging knowledge asymmetry, and building science advice capacity globally’.
- The roundtable will be co-chaired by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the India Government, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood and the Assistant Director General-ADG – Natural Sciences of UNESCO, Dr. Lidia Brito.
Global Innovation Index
- India has achieved 40th rank among 132 economies globally in the 2023 edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII) published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
- NITI Aayog said, India is part of the group of countries that has climbed the GII rankings fastest over the last decade. As per the report, India has also been making the most headway in innovation over the last decade.
- India has emerged as a Regional GII leader as it performed above expectations on innovation relative to the level of economic development. It continues to adhere to the record of being an innovation over-performers for the 13th consecutive year.
- The Global Innovation Index 2023 captures the innovation ecosystem performance of 132 economies and tracks the most recent global innovation trends.
TTOS scheme
- South Africa has announced a new Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) with an initial focus on the tourist markets of India and China.
- The Country’s Home Affairs Department said that the scheme is set to be implemented from January next year.
- The aim of the scheme is to reform the visa system and is expected to increase jobs in the tourism sector.
- TTOS will remove the key obstacles standing in the way of South Africa becoming a favoured tourism destination for the second and fifth largest economies in the world. According to the government, Indian tourists account for only 3.9 percent of all international visitors to South Africa.
‘Aparajita’ Bill
- West Bengal Assembly has unanimously passed the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024’, marking a significant development in the state’s legal framework against sexual crimes.
- This bill introduces the death penalty for individuals convicted of rape if their actions result in the victim’s death or leave her in a vegetative state.
- With this move, West Bengal becomes the first state to amend central laws dealing with rape, gang-rape, and sexual crimes against children.
- The ‘Aparajita’ bill is named in tribute to a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital last month. The bill’s key provisions include:
- Death Penalty: Imposed for rape if the victim dies or suffers severe brain damage.
- Life Sentence: Without parole for those convicted of rape.
- Aparajita Task Force: To ensure punishment within 21 days of the preliminary report.
- Enhanced Safety Measures: Installation of CCTV cameras and increased security on routes used by female healthcare workers, with an allocation of Rs 120 crores.
- ‘Ratri Saathi’ Provision: Extends the duty hours for female workers, ensuring their safety during night shifts.
Paris Paralympics
- Suhas L Yathiraj, the Indian shuttler clinched silver medal in men’s badminton at Paralympic Games 2024 in Paris, bagged his first Paralympic silver in the Tokyo Olympics.
- Indian duo of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar registered a remarkable victory in the bronze medal match against Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina in the mixed team compound archery event. Asian Para Games gold medalist and Arjuna Awardee archer Sheetal Devi is one of India’s top most inspiring sportspersons. The 17-year archer from Jammu district was born with Phocomelia, a rare congenital disorder.
- She is the world’s first and only active female archer to compete without arms. Currently, Sheetal Devi is ranked first in the world in the compound open women’s category. Para-archer Sheetal Devi also received the prestigious Arjuna Award 2023 from President Droupadi Murmu. In 2023, she won a silver at the Para-Archery World Championship, which helped to get her ticket for the Paris Paralympics Games.
- Nithya Sre Sivan Won Bronze Medal at the Paris Paralympics in the Women’s Singles Badminton SH6 event
- India’s Sumit Antil defended his Javelin gold medal, creating a new record to clinch the top podium. Antil recorded a highest throw of 70.59 meter in his second attempt. India’s next Gold medal came from Badminton, where Nitesh Kumar won the Men’s Singles SL3 event.
