BIMSTEC Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced several India-led initiatives towards institution and capacity building in BIMSTEC. Participating in 6th BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit in Bankok, Mr Modi highlighted that BIMSTEC Centres of Excellence will be set up in India on Disaster Management, Sustainable Maritime Transport, Traditional Medicine, and Research and Training in Agriculture.

  • He also announced a new programme for skilling the youth – BODHI [BIMSTEC for Organized Development of Human Resource Infrastructure] under which training and scholarships would be provided to professionals, students, researchers, diplomats and others.
  • He also offered a pilot study by India to assess regional needs in Digital Public Infrastructure and a capacity building programme for cancer care in the region. Calling for greater regional economic integration, Prime Minister offered to establish BIMSTEC Chamber of Commerce and to organize BIMSTEC Business Summit every year in India.
  • Highlighting BIMSTEC as a vital bridge between South Asia and South-East Asia, Prime Minister underlined that the Group had become an impactful platform for regional cooperation, coordination and progress. He called for further strengthening the agenda and capacity of BIMSTEC.

  • Prime Minister welcomed signing of the BIMSTEC Maritime Transport Agreement, adoption of the BIMSTEC Bangkok Vision 2030, and adoption of the Report of BIMSTEC Eminent Persons Group. The BIMSTEC Member States also adopted the Summit Declaration.
  • He said Lord Buddha’s teachings also form the basis of an age-old civilisational bond between India and Thailand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua of Thailand and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana at Dusit Palace in Bangkok. During the meeting, they exchanged views on shared cultural heritage between India and Thailand.
  • They spoke about the relics of Lord Buddha which travelled from India to Thailand last year, and the positive impact of the initiative in further strengthening people-to-people ties. They also discussed ways to further strengthen the multifaceted ties between the two countries.

  • Bangladesh assumed the chairmanship of the regional grouping – Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) – for the next two years.
  • Upon receiving the Chairmanship from the Prime Minister of Thailand, Chief Adviser of Interim Government of Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus made a statement of acceptance, underscoring an inclusive and action-oriented Bimstec. Yunus reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to advancing regional cooperation and development. The Bimstec comprises seven countries of the Bay of Bengal region – Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

India China Celebrate 75 Years Of Diplomatic Relations

  • India and China celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations on April 1, 2025, with leaders from both nations exchanging messages, highlighting the importance of their bilateral ties.

  • India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, advocated strong India-China relations based on non-alignment, Asian solidarity, and the Panchsheel principles of peaceful coexistence.
  • While Nehru envisioned India-China cooperation as crucial for the Global South, the relationship has experienced ups and downs, including border conflicts and two wars.

Mundra Port To Handle 200 MMT Cargo In FY25

  • Mundra port in Gujarat has become the first Indian port to cross 200 million metric tonnes of annual cargo volumes during the financial year 2025.
  • The port handled 200.7 MMT of cargo during FY25. During FY25, all the ports of APSEZ collectively handled 450.2 MMT cargo volume, a seven percent year-on-year growth compared to previous year.
  • The growth was led by growth in containers which grew by 20 percent year-on-year. The volumes of liquid and gas volumes handled grew at nine percent. In the just ended fiscal, logistics rail volume stood at 0.64 million TEUs — a growth of 8 percent.

‘Hamari Parampara Hamari Virasat’

  • Ministry of Panchayati Raj, in collaboration with the Department of Panchayati Raj, Government of Jharkhand, organized a day-long national-level program under the initiative ‘Hamari Parampara Hamari Virasat’ in New Delhi. Addressing the event, Minister of State for Panchayati Raj, Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel, urged the tribal community to focus on education.

  • He added that social, educational, and economic development of the marginalized section is of utmost importance to the country. The event is dedicated to the 150th Birth Anniversary Year of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, celebrating and honoring tribal heritage at the national level.
  • Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth was also present at the event. Over five hundred tribal representatives from Jharkhand, including prominent tribal leaders and community representatives of tribal groups, participated in the event. The initiative primarily aims to integrate tribal heritage into the nation’s cultural and governance framework.

Private Investment In AI

  • India has been ranked 10th in the world with significant private investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2023. According to the 2025 Technology and Innovation Report issued by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), India ranked 36th in 2024 on the Readiness for Frontier Technologies Index, improving its position from 48th in 2022.

  • India ranks 36th out of 170 nations on a global index measuring a country’s readiness for frontier technologies, improving its ranking from last year. The report also notes that China, Germany, India, the UK, and the US show scientific strength in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
  • The US leads the world in terms of private investment in AI, at 67 billion US dollars in 2023, or 70 percent of global AI private investment. China were in second position, with 7.8 billion US dollars, and India in tenth position, with 1.4 billion dollars.

Quad Nations Pledge $20 Million In Aid

  • Australia, India, Japan and the US have extended sympathies and condolences to the peoples of Myanmar and Thailand following the recent earthquake. In a Joint Statement by QUAD partners on Myanmar Earthquake Response, the QUAD nations observed that the significant loss of life, injuries, and widespread destruction of infrastructure have worsened an already-dire humanitarian situation in Myanmar.

  • They welcomed recent commitments to temporary, partial ceasefires. The QUAD has called on all parties to implement, extend and broaden these measures and to provide a safe and conducive environment to facilitate the timely delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance throughout Myanmar.
  • The Quad partners have so far committed humanitarian assistance estimated at a combined value of over 20 million dollars. Through funding and bilateral efforts, QUAD is delivering relief supplies, deploying emergency medical teams and supporting humanitarian partners working in Myanmar to provide care for those affected by the earthquake.
  • The Quad’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Partnership has established a coordination group that is collaborating closely with other partners. The Joint Statement affirmed the Quad’s commitment to working together in response to natural disasters and broader challenges to regional stability and security.

World Cup 2025 Final

  • Hitesh has become the first Indian boxer to reach the Boxing World Cup 2025 Finals in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. He defeated Makan Traore of France 5-0 in the men’s 70kg category in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, other Indian boxers, including Jadumani Singh in the 50kg category, Sachin Siwach in 60kg, and Vishal in the 90kg category, won a bronze medal each.
