World Asthma Day 2026

World Asthma Day is observed globally on May 5 every year to raise awareness about asthma and promote better care for people living with this chronic respiratory disease. In 2026, the day emphasizes the urgent requirement for universal access to effective asthma treatment.

The theme for this year is “Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma – still an urgent need.” It underlines the importance of making essential medicines affordable and accessible, especially in developing regions.

Asthma symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may worsen if not managed properly. Common signs include wheezing, persistent coughing (particularly at night), difficulty in breathing, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Early diagnosis and regular treatment play a crucial role in controlling the disease.

World Press Freedom Index 2026

The Reporters Without Borders released the World Press Freedom Index 2026, which highlights a concerning decline in press freedom worldwide. India has been placed at 157th position out of 180 countries, reflecting challenges in ensuring a free and independent media environment.

The index evaluates countries based on five major parameters: political environment, legal structure, economic conditions, socio-cultural context, and the safety of journalists.

Countries such as Norway, the Netherlands, and Estonia continue to lead the rankings, demonstrating strong democratic values and media independence. On the other hand, nations like Eritrea, North Korea, and China are ranked among the lowest, indicating severe restrictions on press freedom.

In South Asia, India’s position is lower compared to some neighbors like Nepal and Sri Lanka, though it remains ahead of countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Hazaribag to Become India’s First Pearl Farming Cluster

The Hazaribag district of Jharkhand is set to gain recognition as India’s first pearl farming cluster. This initiative is being supported by the fisheries department to promote scientific aquaculture and generate employment opportunities.

The region has been selected due to its suitable water resources and favorable environmental conditions for pearl cultivation. Pearl farming involves inserting a small nucleus into oysters and nurturing them under controlled conditions until pearls are formed.

There are two primary types of pearls produced through this process: freshwater pearls and saltwater pearls. The development of this cluster is expected to boost local livelihoods and strengthen India’s position in the aquaculture sector.
