Indo French Liver And Metabolic Disease Network

  • Union Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has said that there is an urgent need to develop simple, low-cost diagnostic tests for the detection of different stages of fatty liver.

  • Dr Singh said this while launching Indo-French Liver and Metabolic Disease Network to prevent and cure metabolic liver diseases at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi.
  • The Minister highlighted that this network aims to address key issues related to a common metabolic liver disorder and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He said that every third Indian has fatty liver, which predates Type – 2 Diabetes and other metabolic disorders.

Global India AI Summit 2024 Concludes

  • The two-day long Global India AI Summit 2024 concluded at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
  •  The two-day summit featured a diverse array of sessions designed to delve deep into critical aspects of AI application, and governance and for nurturing talent and scaling AI innovations.

  • Electronics and IT Ministry said, 12 thousand global Artificial Intelligence experts and practitioners and delegates from 50 countries attended the summit.
  • During the summit, 16 Deep-tech startups showcased their AI applications and products. The Ministry said, India set the global discourse by emphasizing the intent of the Government to democratize AI and make it accessible to all.
  • During the summit, the Global South countries acknowledged and appreciated the role of India in giving voice to them at the global AI forum and bridging the gap with the Global North.

UK Parliamentary Election

  • Labour Party is inching towards landslide victory in UK’s parliamentary election. Party leader Keir Starmer is set to become Britain’s next prime minister defeating incumbent premier Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party.

  • Labour Party swept to power after more than a decade in opposition. As per the latest data, Labour has won 326 of the 650 seats, as counting of votes continued. In his victory speech, 61-year-old Starmer said, people voted for it and change begins now.
  • British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took responsibility of the loss in his acceptance speech, saying the British people have delivered a sobering verdict and there is much to learn

New Minerals In Northern China

  • Chinese geologists have discovered two new minerals at the world’s largest rare-earth mine in northern China. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has announced the two new niobium-scandium minerals, named Oboniobite and Scandio-fluoro-eckermannite, were discovered in the Bayan Obo deposit in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

  • Niobium and scandium are both extremely rare strategically critical metals. Niobium is mainly used in special steels, superconducting materials and aerospace industries, while scandium is widely used in aluminum-scandium alloys and solid oxide fuel cells.
  • The new minerals contain valuable elements that have significant applications in fields such as new materials, new energy, information technology, aerospace, national defense and military industry, and are of great significance to the country’s economic and social development.

China Leads Global GenAI Patents: U.N. Data

  • China has become a world leader in creative AI technology by filing patents much faster than any other country.
  • New information from the UN shows that China has filed six times as many patents as the US, its main rival in this field.
  • Generative AI is a term for advanced algorithms that can learn from current datasets and make new text, images, music, and computer code.
  • The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) says that over 50,000 patent applications have been made in the last ten years for this technology.
  • Christopher Harrison, who is in charge of patent analytics at WIPO, talked about how fast this field is growing and how it could grow even more.

  • WIPO says that between 2014 and 2023, China filed more than 38,000 Generative AI patents, much more than the 6,276 filings from the US. Chinese users cover a lot of different fields, such as self-driving cars, printing, and managing documents.
  • After China and the US, South Korea, Japan, and India are the next countries with the most inventions filed. India is seeing the most growth in this area. Chinese companies like ByteDance and Alibaba are at the forefront of the app boom. Microsoft is also involved through its partnership with OpenAI, which made ChatGPT.

Russia’s New Orbital Station

  • Russia has approved the schedule for the creation of a Russian orbital station by 2033. The schedule includes the design and construction of the space modules, flight tests of a new-generation manned spaceship, the creation of launch vehicles and space infrastructure on Earth, and a timetable for the work of scientific institutes supporting the project.
  • The agency confirmed plans to launch an initial scientific and energy module in 2027. It said three more modules would be added by 2030 and a further two between 2031 and 2033.

  • Russia has until now partnered with the United States and other countries on the International Space Station, one of the few areas where it still collaborates closely with the US given the dire state of relations since its invasion of Ukraine.
  • With the ISS approaching the end of its operational life, Moscow announced plans in 2022 to pull out of the project and build its own station. It initially said it would quit the ISS after 2024 but told its partners last year it would extend its participation until 2028.

  • Apart from the design and manufacture of the modules, Roscomos said the schedule approved by Borisov includes flight-testing a new-generation crewed spacecraft and building rockets and ground-based infrastructure.
  • The new station will enable Russia to “solve problems of scientific and technological development, national economy and national security that are not available on the Russian segment of the ISS due to technological limitations and the terms of international agreements”, it said.
  • Russia has prided itself on its space programme since the Cold War, when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to travel into space in 1961. But it suffered a major setback last year with the failure of its first lunar mission in 47 years, when its uncrewed spacecraft spun out of control and smashed into the surface of the moon.
