ISA Steel Conclave 2023
- Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal today said that India is moving towards massive investments in infrastructure to meet the aspirations of its growing population.
- While addressing the 4th edition of ‘ISA Steel Conclave 2023’ held in New Delhi today, the Minister acknowledged that the steel sector is vital to achieving this goal, with an aspiration to produce 300 million tonnes of steel annually by 2030.
- During the address, he emphasized the importance of fair treatment for Indian producers and exporters and reaffirmed India’s commitment to opposing unfair taxes or levies that may harm the steel industry.
- The Minister further highlighted efforts to secure better Free Trade Agreement access for the steel industry in developed countries.
International Solar Alliance
- Chile has become the 95th member of the International Solar Alliance ISA.
- Chile handed over the Instrument of ISA ratification during the meeting of Ambassador Juan Angulo of Chile with Joint Secretary (Economic Diplomacy) in Ministry of External Affairs Abhishek Singh in New Delhi.
- The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is an alliance of more than 120 signatory countries, most being sunshine countries, which lie either completely or partly between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
- The primary objective of the alliance is to work for the efficient consumption of solar energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
- This initiative was first proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a speech in November 2015 at Wembley Stadium (London HA9 0WS, United Kingdom), in which he referred to sunshine countries as Suryaputra (“Sons of the Sun”).
FIDE Grand Swiss
- In Chess, R Vaishali drew her last-round game against Mongolia’s Batkhuyag Munguntuul to win FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss 2023 at the Isle of Man in UK last night.
- Vidit Gujrathi beat Alexandr Predke of Serbia to record his seventh victory in the event and take the top spot in open section.
- Both players also qualified for the prestigious Candidates tournament to be played in April next year in Canada. Both Vaishali and Vidit ended with identical 8.5 points apiece and stayed a half point clear of nearest rivals.
- While Vaishali got richer by over 20 lakh rupees, Vidit took home a whopping prize purse of over 66 lakh rupees.
- Vaishali became the first Indian to win the Grand Swiss and will have her task cut out in the Candidates alongside India’s first woman Grandmaster – Koneru Humpy. Humpy is likely to qualify by virtue of her high rating but the decision will be known only in January 2024.
Women’s Asian Champions Trophy
- In Hockey, the Indian women’s team dethroned Japan to crown themselves Asian Champions Trophy winners.
- India overcame the two-time champions through goals from Sangita Kumari, Neha, Laremsiami and Vandana Katariya. India won their maiden Asian Champions Trophy title in 2016 in Singapore, while Japan bagged the crown twice, in 2013 and 2021.
- Earlier in the day, Asian Games champions China beat South Korea 2-1 to secure the third place. Yi Chen and Tiantian Luo scored for the winners while Sujin An found the target for Korea.
- In recognition of their exceptional performance, marked by an undefeated streak throughout the tournament and their title victory, Hockey India announced 3 lakh rupees to each player, and 1.50 lakh rupees each for support staff. Jharkhand’s Salima Tete was announced the Player of the Tournament.

India’s Largest Cold Oil Production Facility In Gujarat
- Bharat Botanics announced the opening of its cutting-edge wood-pressed Cold Oil processing facility in Gondal, Rajkot Gujarat.
- This 16,000 square feet automated facility is one of its kind, promoting 100% hygiene and transparency, marking a significant step towards healthier living, sustainability, and providing healthy edible oils for every customer it serves.
- Cold-pressed oils are a border spectrum that covers all different kinds of mechanisms that are used to extract a quality yield at lower temperatures. Wood pressed oils only cover the extraction of oil through wooden pestles (Ghani, Kolhu or Chekku).
AIFF Wins Grassroots Football Award
- AIFF wins Asian Football Confederation President’s Recognition Bronze award for Grassroots Football.
- All India Football Federation has secured its second Grassroots Football award, with the previous one being earned in 2014.
- The accomplishment reflects AIFF’s commitment to promoting football at the grassroots level, characterised by several innovative initiatives.
- Numerous special projects have been initiated as part of this endeavour, including the AIFF Blue Cubs programme, Blue Cubs Coaching Courses, Blue Cubs Leagues, Blue Cubs Football Schools, AIFF Grassroots Awards, AIFF Institutional League for Non-Professional Entities, AIFF Project Diamond and several other projects at the grassroots level.
IIT Madras Sets Its First International Campus
- IIT Madras has become the first Indian Institute of Technology to establish an international campus on the picturesque Zanzibar Island in East Africa.
- Inaugurated by the President of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, this historic initiative signifies a brighter educational future, facilitated by a memorandum of understanding between India and Tanzania, ushering in a new era of global education and cooperation.
- The establishment of the IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus represents a remarkable achievement for both India and Tanzania.

India’s First Port To Handle 16.1 Million Tonnes Of Cargo
- Mudra Port, the flagship of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), continues to break records in India’s maritime industry.
- With its strategic location, superior infrastructure and consistent growth, the port has achieved remarkable milestones, including handling over 16.1 million metric tons (MMT) of Cargo in October 2023.
- This article explores the significant achievements of Mudra Port, its historical timeline and its ambitious target of reaching 200 MMT in cargo volumes by FY25. Mundra Port’s remarkable feat does not stop at just one record.
- It crossed the 100 MMT-mark in a mere 210 days, surpassing its previous record of 231 days from the previous year. This impressive accomplishment the port’s commitment to increasing its cargo handling capacity, making it a vital part of India’s trade network.

GRAP Stage 4 In Delhi
- The Commission for Air Quality Management has decided to invoke the fourth stage of the anti-pollution GRAP regime in Delhi and surrounding areas after the air quality index plummeted to ‘severe’ levels.
- Apart from the provisions of the fourth stage, provisions of stages 1, 2 and 3 will remain effective in the national capital region.
- GRAP is a set of emergency measures that kick in to prevent further deterioration of air quality once it reaches a certain threshold in the Delhi-NCR region.
- Approved by the Supreme Court in 2016 and notified in 2017, the plan was formulated after several meetings that the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority held with state government representatives and experts.
- The result was a plan that institutionalised measures to be taken when air quality deteriorates.
- 8 Point Action Plan – Restrict entry of truck traffic into Delhi, with exceptions for trucks carrying essential goods/services and all LNG/CNG/electric trucks.
- Do not allow non-Delhi-registered LCVs, except EVs/CNG/BS-VI diesel vehicles, into Delhi, except those carrying essential goods/services.
- Prohibit diesel-operated Medium Goods Vehicles and Heavy Goods Vehicles registered in Delhi, except those transporting essential goods/services.
- Halt construction and demolition activities in linear public projects like highways, roads, flyovers, overbridges, power transmission, pipelines, etc.
- Consider conducting lessons for classes VI-IX, class XI online instead of physical classes.
- Allow public, municipal, and private offices to operate at 50 per cent strength, with the rest working from home.
- Central Government to decide on permitting work from home for employees in Central Government offices.
- State Governments to explore emergency measures such as closing colleges/educational institutions and implementing odd-even vehicle registration number-based restrictions for non-essential commercial activities.
