International Literacy Day
- International Literacy Day 2024 is celebrated annually on September 8 around the world to raise awareness about the significance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a matter of dignity.
- It aims to promote literacy and contribute to building a more literate and sustainable society.
- International Literacy Day is marked by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) at the global, regional, country, and local levels across the world.
- The theme for International Literacy Day 2024 is ‘Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace.”
- Mr Dhankhar Was The Chief Guest At An Event On The Occasion Of International Literacy Day In Delhi.
- The Vice President Pointed Out That India Is A Unique Nation When It Comes To The Richness Of Languages.
- He Emphasised That National Education Policy Has Laid Emphasis On The Importance Of Mother Tongue. Mr Dhankhar Stressed That Literacy Brings Liberation And Cuts Down Dependence.
- India’s Literacy Rate After Independence Was 12 Percent, The Vice President Noted That Country Only Has To Make Up For 20 Percent Now. Mr Dhankhar Urged Everyone To Take The Pledge Of Making Atleast One Person Literate. He Said Making Someone Literate Is A Service To Humanity.
EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar
- External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to attend the First India-Gulf Cooperation Council GCC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
- During the two day visit, he is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Foreign Ministers from GCC member countries.
- The GCC region has emerged as a major trading partner for India and is home to a large Indian expatriate community, numbering around 8.9 million.
- The Foreign Ministers meeting will be an opportunity to review and deepen institutional cooperation between India and the GCC across various sectors.
- On the second leg of the visit, Dr Jaishankar will travel to Berlin, Germany for a two day visit. This will be his third bilateral visit to Berlin.
- Both India and Germany share a robust Strategic Partnership and Germany is one of India’s prominent trading partners and among the largest Foreign Direct Investors.
- During the visit, the External Affairs Minister will meet German Federal Foreign Minister as well as the leadership and other Ministers from the German government with an objective to review the entire gamut of bilateral relations between India and Germany.
- Dr Jaishankar will thereafter travel to Geneva, Switzerland for an official visit from 12th of this month. Geneva is home to a large number of UN bodies and international organizations.
- During the visit, the External Affairs Minister will meet with heads and representatives of international organizations with whom India is actively engaged.
Typhoon Yagi
- Vietnam, at least 14 people have died and 176 injured after Typhoon Yagi struck the country.
- Vietnam’s meteorological agency issued the downgrade in the typhoon today as the storm moved westward. However, it caution about the ongoing risk of flooding and landslides.
- Vietnamese officials described Yagi as one of the most deadly typhoons to hit the region in the recent decade, leaving more than 3 million people without electricity in northern Vietnam.
- According to government sources, the typhoon destroyed nearly 3,300 buildings, 1.2 lakh hectares of rice and other crops, more than 5,000 hectares of fruit trees, and over 1,000 aquaculture cages in the region.
- The Typhoon hit Hainan in China flooding roads, uprooted trees and cut power to more than 800,000 homes. Yagi had already claimed 16 lives in the Philippines, the first country it hit earlier in the week.
India Mediterranean Business Conclave
- Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is an important initiative that can add to India’s maritime security and faster movement of goods between Europe and Asia.
- The Minister was speaking at the India-Mediterranean Business Conclave 2024 in New Delhi. He said that IMEC was launched during India’s G20 presidency and aims to integrate India, Europe, and the Middle East through the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, and the European Union.
- Mr. Goyal noted that lower logistics costs, faster connectivity, and secure movement of goods are dependent on better cooperation in this area. He noted that initiatives like the PLI scheme, the Centre’s efforts towards Ease of Doing Business, and economic partnerships have boosted India’s manufacturing growth story.
- He added that a nation’s efforts to promote agri-value chains can support the initiatives between India and Mediterranean countries. Mr. Goyal also suggested that the government should have a working group on tourism between the Mediterranean nations and India, as there is huge potential in this sector.
‘Dekho Apna Desh, People’s Choice 2024
- The voting for Dekho Apna Desh, People’s Choice 2024, is open until the 15th of this month. The aim of the nation-wide poll is to engage with citizens to identify the most preferred tourist attraction sites and understand tourist perceptions across five tourism categories, which are spiritual, cultural heritage, nature, wildlife, adventure, and others.
- The others category will allow citizens to vote for their personal favourites, which will help in discovering unexplored tourist places in the country.
- The citizens can access the voting portal from the Ministry of Tourism’s official website. This initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March this year in Srinagar.
- There is a dedicated portal wherein users can vote across categories through their mobile number and email ID.
- The outcomes will help determine the Top Tourist Attractions of India, which will receive substantial support and investments from key stakeholders. Through the initiative, the government seeks to promote the preservation of cultural landmarks and traditions, ensuring their longevity for future generations. This will also allow help in understanding lesser-known tourist locations that people would like to visit apart.
