World Post Day 2023

  • TWorld Post Day is celebrated each year on October 9th to commemorate the creation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.
  • It’s a day to recognize the crucial role that post offices play in connecting communities, and in 2023, the theme is “Together for Trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future.”
  • The first organized postal service established during the time of Augustus Caesar in Rome. Remarkably, the oldest functioning post office is in Sanquhar, Scotland, operating since 1712 AD.
  • World Post Day was officially declared by the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969. The UPU is an international organization that promotes and coordinates postal services worldwide.

Indian Air Force Day

  • The Indian Air Force IAF is going to celebrate its 91st Air Force day. Officially the Indian Air Force was established on 8 October, 1932.
  • Every year Air Force Day is celebrated on 8 October. This special location will be celebrated and displayed over the holy Sangam area of Prayagraj by the Indian Air Force flying its aircraft in the luv Kush, Sugreev and a Bharat formation along with others.
  • In the celebration of Air Force day there will be a total number of 120 aircraft taking part in the air display in Prayagraj.

  • This is the first AF Day parade which was commanded by a woman officer, GP Capt Shaliza Dhami. She is also the first woman officer of the IAF to command a combat unit.
  • For the first time, the parade had an all-women contingent composed of the newly inducted Agniveer Vayu women, who marched shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts.
  • The parade also included a flight of Garud Commandos of the IAF for the first time. The Garuds have recently completed 20 years of service to the nation.

India’s Historic Re-election as AIBD GC President

  • India has been re-elected as the President of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) General Conference (GC) for an unprecedented third successive term.
  • This remarkable accomplishment, announced by Apurva Chandra, Secretary of the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, signifies a monumental moment in AIBD’s history.
  • The decision showcases the immense confidence bestowed upon India by broadcasting organizations across the Asia Pacific and the global arena.
  • Established in 1977 under the auspices of UNESCO, AIBD stands as a prestigious institution with 92 member organizations spanning 44 countries.
  • Among its members are 26 government representatives from various countries, comprising 48 broadcasting authorities and broadcasters, along with 44 affiliates from 28 nations and regions across Asia, Pacific, Europe, Africa, Arab States, and North America.

EU Approves World’s First Green Bond Standards

  • In a significant move to combat greenwashing and assist investors in identifying truly sustainable companies, European Union lawmakers have approved groundbreaking standards for companies issuing “green” bonds.
  •  This new initiative aims to promote transparency and credibility in the green bond market, preventing misleading climate-friendly claims.

  • The European Parliament’s approval marks the introduction of a voluntary standard for the use of the “European Green Bond” label, heralded as the first of its kind globally.
  • Greenwashing is when an organization spends more time and money on marketing itself as environmentally friendly than on actually minimizing its environmental impact.
  • A Green bond is a fixed-income financial instruments which is used to fund projects that have positive environmental and/or climate benefits.

India Art Architecture & Design Biennale 2023

  • Minister of State for Culture Meenakashi Lekhi unveiled the logo of the upcoming India Art Architecture & Design Biennale (IAADB) 2023 at National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi.
  • The IAADB 2023 will take place from 8th to 15th December at the Red Fort.
  • It will be an event of 7 Days based on 7 themes by 7 Curators. It will be a testament to promote and preserve heritage of India.
  • Ms Lekhi said that this will be an event celebrating the inner creativity of Indians and the indigenous Art which exists in the country.
  • She said that this is a humble initiative by the Ministry of Culture and that India’s heritage needs to be given space and celebrated.

Samia Suluhu Hassan

  • Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan arrived in New Delhi for a four-day state visit, during which she will participate in bilateral meetings and exchange MoUs with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs said the Tanzanian President will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Monday and then she will participate in the wreath-laying ceremony to be held at the Rajghat. Later she will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a Memorandum of Understanding will be exchanged between the two countries. The Ministry further said that President Droupadi Murmu will also hold a formal meeting with the Tanzanian counterpart at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Operation Al-Aqsa Flood

  • The Israel-Palestine conflict has escalated dramatically as Hamas, the armed Palestinian group, initiated “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” firing over 5,000 rockets into Israel.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a state of war, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
  •  Israeli Defence forces launch operation ‘Iron Swords’ following Hamas attacks: Visuals – YouTube. Soon after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared “war” in retaliation to the unprecedented Hamas military incursion into Israel early on Saturday, the Israel Defence Force said it has launched operation ‘Iron Swords’.
  •  He asserted that this was not a mere operation but a full-blown war. Netanyahu vowed that Hamas would face an unparalleled retaliation.
  • The situation quickly escalated into a full-scale war, resulting in significant casualties and widespread fear among civilians.
  • The conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants, particularly Hamas, dates back to 2007.
  • The latest escalation followed heightened tensions, exacerbated by Israel’s closure of borders to Gazan workers.
  • The conflict’s toll included both combatants and civilians, with a significant number of casualties reported on both sides.

The Mahabharata: Mewari Miniature Paintings

  • Chandra Prakash Deval (Rajasthani literature expert) and Alok Bhalla (academic-translator) have recently authored “The Mahabharata: Mewari Miniature Paintings (1680–1698) by Allah Baksh”.
  • It is a four-volume set of books showcasing nearly 2,000 never-before published miniature artworks about the Mahabharata.
  • These were commissioned by Maharana Jai Singh of Udaipur.
  • They were painted between 1680 and 1698 by his court painter Allah Baksh.
  • Each painting includes a verse from the Mahabharata in Mewari written by Pandit Kishan Das, related to the image.
  • These radiant miniatures follow almost every story of the Mahabharata.
  • The emphasis in these paintings is on the pain that the earth and its creatures endure when human beings tragically fail to fulfil their dharma, loosely translated as moral duty.
  • The paintings are symbolically charged, with clear and luminous colors, restrained and precise lines.

Trade and Development Report 2023

  • According to the 2023 Trade and Development Report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the global economy is expected to experience a growth rate of 2.4%.
  • UNCTAD has labeled this sluggish growth as “stalled speed,” defining a global recession as a growth rate below 2.5%.
  • Specifically concerning India, UNCTAD has revised its economic growth forecast for 2023 upward to 6.6%, surpassing the previous estimate of 6%. However, it predicts a slight dip in India’s growth to 6.2% for the year 2024. India’s economic growth is primarily being driven by government expenditures and favorable external trade conditions. Nevertheless, a significant concern is the “historic” unemployment rate of 8.5% reported in June 2023.
  • Established in 1964, UNCTAD is a permanent intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting the integration of developing countries into the global economy in a development-friendly manner. Its headquarters are located in Geneva, Switzerland.

Asian Games

  • At the Hangzhou Asian Games in China, the Indian contingent finished its campaign by living up to the commitment of “Iss baar 100 paar” with a record haul of 107 medals comprised of 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze.
  • This outstanding feat surpassed India’s previous best of 70 medals at the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018.
  • This is the second time India has won more than 100 medals in any of the three major Games – the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games, and the Asian Games.
  • They had won 101 medals in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
  • On the last day of India’s medal action, Indian players won a total of 12 medals, with half of them being gold in sports events like kabaddi, badminton, hockey, and archery.
  • Indian athletes and shooters were the show-stoppers of the Asian Games. Athletic brought India the most 29 medals.
  • On the other hand, Indian shooters brought a total of 22 medals for the nation.
