International Week Of Science & Peace

  • The annual celebration of the International Week of Science and Peace (IWOSP) from November 9 to 15 serves as a powerful testament to the crucial role of science in promoting global peace and advancement.
  • Emerging in 1986 as a part of the International Year of Peace, this week was formally acknowledged by the United Nations General Assembly in 1988.

  • Over the years, it has transformed into a platform that fosters international collaboration, ignites inspiration in future generations, and underscores the transformative potential of science in shaping a more serene and sustainable world.
  • The International Week of Science and Peace acts as a poignant call for scientists, policymakers, and the worldwide community to utilize the influence of science for the betterment of humanity.
  • Through its annual commemoration, IWOSP continues to make significant contributions to international comprehension and collaboration, setting the stage for a future where science leads the way in constructing a more harmonious world.

Shivaji Maharaj Statue In J & K’s Kupwara

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with other dignitaries, inaugurated a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on November 7.
  • The statue, a symbol of cultural pride, was installed at the 41 National Rifle (Maratha LI) camp, which is located in close proximity to the Line of Control (LoC) separating India and Pakistan. This isn’t the first instance of honoring Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Jammu and Kashmir.

  • In January 2022, the Maratha Regiment unveiled two other statues of the legendary king, with one of them being installed at an astonishing altitude of 14,800 feet above sea level near the Line of Control.
  • These installations continue to foster cultural exchanges and historical remembrance in challenging terrains.

KVIC Chairman Inaugurates ‘Diwali Utsav

  • In line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s appeal for the promotion of locally-made products, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has taken a significant step towards fostering economic self-reliance for artisans in rural India.
  • Under the leadership of Shri Manoj Kumar, Chairman of KVIC, the ‘Diwali Utsav’ Gramshilpa, Khadi Lounge was inaugurated in Connaught Place, New Delhi. This initiative aims to connect people with the spirit of ‘Vocal for Local’ during festive occasions.
  • The ‘Diwali Utsav’ Gramshilpa, Khadi Lounge, and associated initiatives exemplify a concerted effort to amplify the ‘Vocal for Local’ message.
  • As citizens embrace locally-made products, they not only celebrate festivals but also contribute to the economic empowerment of rural artisans, aligning with the transformative vision set forth by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

IBM & AWS Launched An Innovation Lab

  • IBM and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced the launch of an Innovation Lab situated at the IBM Client Experience Center in Bengaluru, India.
  • This marks a significant expansion of their collaborative services, with a focus on empowering mutual clients through the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

  • The newly established Innovation Lab stands as a testament to the commitment of IBM and AWS to facilitate experimentation with cutting-edge cloud-enabled technologies, including generative AI.
  • Open to clients worldwide, the lab encourages exploration of joint solutions, testing prototypes, and validating proofs of value with the aim of accelerating innovation across various industries.
  • IBM and AWS have identified key industries for targeted collaboration, including Banking and Financial Services, Automotive, Manufacturing, Energy and Utilities, Travel and Transportation, and Healthcare.
  • The intention is to leverage the power of generative AI to drive transformative changes within these sectors.

QS Asia University Rankings 2024

  • India surpassed China with the highest number of universities listed in the QS Asia University Rankings 2024 released. The rankings show the highest number of 37 new entrants from India with seven Indian universities ranked among the top 100 Asian universities.
  • India is now the most represented higher education system with 148 featured universities, according to the QS Asia University Rankings 2024.  Compared to 148 Indian institutions, the number from China is 133 and Japan is 96.

  • Peking University From China (Mainland) Retains Its Top-most Position. The University Of Hong Kong In The Second Position And The National University Of Singapore In The Third Place.
  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, continues to retain its top ranking in India.
  • Similar to the previous year, IISc Bangalore, Delhi University, and five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), including Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, and Kanpur, have secured positions among the top 100 institutes in Asia.

Discovery Of The Lost Continent Of Argoland

  • Scientists deduced the existence of Argoland from the Argo Abyssal Plain, a vast basin beneath the ocean.
  • Remnants of Argoland are believed to be buried under parts of Southwest Asia, including Indonesia and Myanmar. The study identifies fragments of Argoland in regions like Southwest Borneo and West Burma.

  • Argoland was a colossal continent that existed alongside northeastern Australia 155 million years ago.
  • This landmass, stretching 3,000 miles long, has been a long-standing geological mystery.
  • Unlike other continents that split into two, Argoland shattered into numerous pieces, making its historical path complex. The continent began breaking apart around 300 million years ago, during Gondwana’s era.

Venus Has Oxygen

  • Scientists have detected atomic oxygen in the atmosphere of Venus, Earth’s neighboring planet.
  • The detection was made using an instrument aboard the SOFIA airborne observatory, a modified Boeing 747SP aircraft carrying an infrared telescope.

  • This joint project between Nasa and the German Aerospace Center has opened new avenues for understanding the atmospheric composition of Venus. 
  • The detected atomic oxygen, consisting of a single oxygen atom, differs from molecular oxygen, which consists of two oxygen atoms and is breathable.
  • The researchers were able to detect oxygen on both the sun-facing side of Venus, where it is produced, and the side facing away from the sun.
