Good Manufacturing Practice Day

  • The Indian government, in collaboration with the Indian Drugs Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA), is set to observe the first-ever National Current Good Manufacturing Practice Day (cGMP Day) on 10th October.
  • This initiative aims to underscore the importance of adhering to cGMP guidelines in pharmaceutical manufacturing, with a focus on improving product quality and ensuring patient safety.
  • Current Good Manufacturing Practices, commonly referred to as cGMP, are stringent quality standards mandated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Nobel Prize 2023 in Economic Sciences

  • The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2023 was awarded to Claudia Goldinfor having advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes”.
  • This year’s Laureate in the Economic Sciences, Claudia Goldin, provided the first comprehensive account of women’s earnings and labour market participation through the centuries.
  • Her research reveals the causes of change, as well as the main sources of the remaining gender gap.
  •  In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden’s central bank) established this prize in memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize.

Kenyan Kiptum Breaks Marathon World Record

  • Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum shattered the men’s world record, clocking a time of two hours and 35 seconds, to claim victory at the Chicago Marathon.
  • Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum left the running world in awe as he shattered the men’s world record, clocking a time of just two hours and 35 seconds, to claim victory at the Chicago Marathon.
  • He broke the previous record set by Eliud Kipchoge in the 2022 Berlin Marathon.
  • Kiptum’s victory marked the third time a men’s world record had been established on the streets of Chicago, but it was the first time since Morocco’s Khalid Khannouchi achieved the feat in 1999.
  • The Kenyan runner’s triumph sent shockwaves throughout the running community, igniting excitement and anticipation for future races.

Sultan of Johar Cup

  • Hockey India announced a 20-member Indian junior men’s team for the Sultan of Johar Cup to be held from 27th of October to 4th of November in Malaysia.
  • Uttam Singh was appointed captain while Rajinder Singh will serve as his deputy.
  • The 11th edition of the tournament will feature eight teams.
  • The Sultan of Johor Cup is an annual, international under-21 men’s field hockey tournament held in Malaysia.
  • The first edition held in 2011.

Sri Lanka Set To Take Over Chairmanship Of IORA

  • Sri Lanka is set to take over the chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) during the 23rd Council of Ministers’ Meeting in Colombo.
  • Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry in an announcement said that the association’s member states will hold discussions on collaboration in various sectors, including trade and investment, maritime safety and security, fisheries management, disaster risk management, and the blue economy, among others.
  • The deliberations will be guided by recommendations from the 25th Committee of IORA Senior Officials being held today and tomorrow.
  • Sri Lanka will hold the chairmanship of the association from 2023 to 2025, with the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh ceremoniously handing over the chairmanship to Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister M.U.M. Ali Sabry.
  • The IORA, an intergovernmental organization established in 1997, comprises 23 member states and 11 dialogue partners hailing from regions surrounding the Indian Ocean.

Afghanistan Earthquakes

  • Afghanistan, death toll from strong earthquakes has risen to over 2,400 as search and rescue efforts continue amid reports that some people may be trapped under collapsed buildings.
  • It was one of the deadliest earthquakes to strike the country in two decades. 
  • UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said at least 465 houses had been reported destroyed and 135 were damaged.
  • The 6.3 magnitude quake struck about 40km from the western city of Herat on Saturday.
  • Many buildings were damaged, trapping people under rubble and there were at least three powerful aftershocks.
  • Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes – especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range as it lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
  • In June last year, the province of Paktika was hit by a 5.9 magnitude quake which killed more than 1,000 people and left tens of thousands homeless.

  • Speaking on this occasion, the President highlighted the relevance of the theme of the event ‘From Research to Impact: Towards Just and Resilient Agri-Food Systems’ saying that humanity cannot survive without foodgrain.
  • She underscored the need to promote women’s participation in the decision-making in farm production for making this sector more equitable and resilient.
  • Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, the government has taken several measures for the welfare of small and marginalized farmers in the last few years resulting in significant growth in food production.
  • Use of innovative techniques and increasing women’s participation have also supplimented the agriculture food system.

India And Saudi Arabia Tie Up For Green Hydrogen

  • India and Saudi Arabia signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU in the fields of Electrical Interconnections, Green and Clean Hydrogen and Supply Chains on Sunday.
  • The MoU was signed between the Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy R.K Singh and the Minister of Energy, Government of Saudi Arabia, Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud on the sidelines of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Climate Week in Riyadh.
  • The MoU aims to establish a general framework for cooperation between the two countries in the field of electrical interconnection, exchange of electricity during peak times and emergencies, co-production of green and clean hydrogen and renewable energy; and also establishing secure, reliable and resilient supply chains of materials.
  • It was also decided that B2B Business Summits and regular B2B interactions between the two countries will be held to establish complete supply and value chains in areas of energy sector cooperation.
