World Food Day

  • World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year worldwide on October 16 to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945.
  • The Theme of World Food Day is – Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind. “Water is essential to life on Earth.
  • It covers the majority of the Earth’s surface, makes up over 50% of our bodies, produces our food, and supports livelihoods.
  • The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security, including the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
  • World Food Day (WFD) was established by FAO’s Member Countries at the Organization’s 20th General Conference in November 1979.

World Students Day

  • The United Nations officially designated October 15 as World Students Day in 2010.
  • This date holds special significance as it is the birthdate of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
  • World Students Day is being celebrated in the country to mark birth anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th president of the country.
  • Dr APJ Abdul Kalam also known as the ‘Missile Man’ of India was born on the 15th of October, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu
  • From the small village of Ramesharwam to the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi, Dr Kalam’s life story has inspired millions of people.
  • The Theme for World Students Day 2023 is “FAIL: stands for First Attempt in Learning.”
  • This theme, introduced by the Ministry of Education and the Government of India, aims to motivate students to embrace failure as a learning experience and continue their educational journey.

India & Sri Lanka Resume Ferry Service After 40 Years

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India and Sri Lanka are embarking on a new chapter in diplomatic and economic relations.  He was addressing the launch of ferry services between Nagapattinam, India and Kankesanthurai, Sri Lanka.
  • Mr. Modi said, the launch of a ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai is an important milestone in strengthening the relations as both countries share a deep history of culture. 
  • He also spoke about Sangam age literature like Pattinappalai and Manimekalai which describe the movement of boats and ships between the two countries.
  • He also touched upon the great poet Subramania Bharti’s song ‘Sindhu Nadhiyin Misai’, which mentions a bridge connecting India and Sri Lanka.
  • Srilankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe expressed happiness at India’s initiatives in helping the island Nation in resuming the ferry service.
  • He said that the connectivity which was stopped during the war in the island Nation has resumed after peace returned.

Asian Women’s Hockey Championship

  • Chief Minister Hemant Soren unveiled the mascot- Juhi and the trophy of Asian Women’s Hockey Championship in Ranchi.
  • Around 13 countries will take part in the international hockey championship beginning from October 27 to November 14 in Ranchi.
  • On the occasion, Mr. Soren thanked Mohd Taiyab Ekram, President of International Hockey Association and Mr Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India to organise the international sporting event in Jharkhand.
  • The Women’s Asian Champions Trophy is a biennial women’s international field hockey competition contested by the best five women’s national teams of the member associations of the Asian Hockey Federation.

Pontus Tectonic Plate

  • A long-lost tectonic plate dubbed ‘Pontus’ was recently discovered by chance by scientists studying ancient rocks in Borneo.
  •  Discovered by Suzanna van de Lagemaat, a doctoral candidate at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, and her colleagues.
  • The Pontus plate was a significant tectonic plate, about a quarter of the size of the Pacific Ocean.
  • It once underpinned the region now known as the South China Sea.
  • Named the ‘Pontus plate’ due to its association with the ancient Pontus Ocean.
  • The Pontus plate likely formed at least 160 million years ago, although its actual age could be older.
  • Over time, it gradually diminished in size before being pushed under the Australian plate to the south and China to the north, ultimately disappearing 20 million years ago.

  • Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh launches state-of-art latest National Survey Network; the nationwide “Continuously Operating Reference Stations” (CORS) Network will be operated by the Survey of India.
