ADB Invest To Improve Ahmedabad’s Peri Urban Areas

  • The Asian Development Bank has approved a $181 million loan to enhance urban living in Ahmedabad, India.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $181 million loan to boost living standards in the peri-urban regions surrounding Ahmedabad, a city located in Gujarat, India.
  • The primary objective is to upgrade the living conditions and transportation networks in these swiftly expanding zones.

  • A key focus of this initiative is to manage urban expansion. This strategy holds potential for implementation in various other states, aiding in the regulation of urban growth and development in both cities and their neighboring vicinities.
  • Under the Ahmedabad Peri-urban Livability Improvement Project, several vital infrastructure enhancements will be undertaken.
  • Installation of a 166-kilometer water distribution network.
  • Construction of climate-resilient stormwater drainage systems spanning 126 kilometers.
  • Development of 300 kilometers of sewerage systems. Establishment of four sewage treatment plants.
  • Additionally, the project will work towards augmenting the connectivity between the peri-urban areas and the city of Ahmedabad.

Jharkhand 1st State To Ensure Minimum Wages

  • Jharkhand is making history by becoming the first state in India to take steps towards including gig workers, such as Swiggy, Zomato, Ola, Uber, and Rapido employees, under the ambit of minimum wages.
  • This step marks a significant stride towards ensuring equitable remuneration for individuals operating within the gig economy.

  • Jharkhand’s pioneering move not only extends to the consideration of minimum wages for gig workers but also involves a review of the minimum wage standards for workers in various other sectors, underscoring the state’s commitment to local employment and social equity.
  • To address this crucial matter, the Jharkhand State Minimum Wage Advisory Council, operating under the state’s labor department, has established a committee.
  • The committee’s primary objective is to conduct an in-depth assessment of the working conditions experienced by gig workers, encompassing those involved in delivery services and ride-hailing platforms.
  • Subsequently, the committee will provide recommendations concerning the implementation of minimum wage policies for these workers.

Dr. S Jaishankar Unveils Bust Of Mahatma Gandhi

  • External Affairs Minister said the unveiling of the bust is a symbolic moment for the friendship between India and Vietnam, and underlines the message of independence, self-reliance and human dignity.

Supreme Court Refuses To Legalise Same Sex Marriage

  •  India’s Supreme Court declined an appeal to legalize same-sex marriages in the country, dealing a blow to LGBTQ rights in one of the world’s most populous nations.
  • The Supreme Court refused to tweak the Special Marriage Act to legalise same-sex marriage.
  • The court also refused to strike down Section 4 of the law to allow a non-heterosexual couple to marry under the law.  
  • A five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud agreed with the Centre’s view that tinkering with the law could have a cascading effect on other laws. The other members of the bench were justices S.K. Kaul, Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli and P.S. Narasimha. 
  • The bench was unanimous in its ruling on not modifying or reading into the Act to allow same-sex marriages in the country.
  • The court advised the central government to set-up a high-powered committee headed by the cabinet secretary to address the concerns of same-sex couples, including ration cards, pension, gratuity and succession.

NSDC & Coca-Cola Launch Super Power Retailer Program

Ranbireshwar temple

  • In Jammu and Kashmir, amidst two days of incessant rain, a portion of Ranbireshwar Temple collapsed in Jammu.
