Largest Coal Mines

  • Coal Ministry has said that two of the world’s five largest Coal Mines are now in India. These mines, operated by Chhattisgarh-based Coal India subsidiary South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), namely Gevra and Kusmunda, rank second and fourth respectively among the world’s largest coal mines.

  • The list was released by WorldAtlas.com. Together, the Gevra and Kusmunda mines produce over 100 million tons of coal annually, constituting approximately ten per cent of India’s total coal production.
  • The Gevra opencast mine, which began operations in 1981, boasts an annual production capacity of 70 million tons and achieved an output of 59 million tons in the fiscal year 2023-24. It holds sufficient coal reserves to meet the country’s energy needs for the next decade.
  • Meanwhile, the Kusmunda mine contributed more than 50 million tons of coal to the production total in 2023-24.

India’s Target To Achieve USD 500 Billion In Electronics

  • India has set a target to achieve 500 billion US dollars in electronics manufacturing in value terms by 2030.
  • This ambitious target comprises 350 billion dollars from finished goods manufacturing and 150 billion dollars from components manufacturing.

  • NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery launched the report titled Electronics: Powering India’s Participation in Global Value Chains in New Delhi.
  • The Report extensively analyses India’s electronics sector, emphasizing its potential and challenges. It also outlines specific interventions needed for India to emerge as a global manufacturing hub for electronics.

  • Global Value Chains are critical in modern manufacturing, involving international collaboration across design, production, marketing, and distribution.
  • The report highlighted that India’s electronics sector has experienced rapid growth, reaching 155 billion US dollars in 2023. The production has nearly doubled from 48 billion dollars in 2017 to 101 billion dollars in 2023, driven primarily by manufacturing mobile phones.

India’s Longest And Largest Urban Tunnel

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s longest and largest urban tunnel project, the Thane Borivali Twin Tunnel, developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This initiative is part of broader infrastructure projects worth Rs. 29,000 crore aimed at enhancing connectivity in Mumbai.

  • The tunnel, which includes a 10.25 km bored section with cross passages every 300 meters, will use India’s largest tunnel-boring machine. MMRDA assures that its construction will not harm the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and will help reduce noise and air pollution.

Global Biofuels Alliance

  • Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), launched in September 2023 by key G20 members including India, the United States, and Brazil, is poised to take a significant step forward in its institutional development.
  • The Indian government is preparing to sign a headquarters agreement with the alliance, marking a crucial milestone in the organization’s evolution and India’s role in global sustainable energy initiatives.

  • The headquarters agreement will pave the way for the government to grant exemptions, immunities and privileges to the alliance and its secretariat in the country, as contemplated under Section-3 of the United Nations (Privileges & Immunities) Act, 1947. 
  • This elevated status will enable the GBA to function more efficiently at the international level, mirroring the recognition given to other global initiatives like the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

Missy Elliott’s “The Rain” Sent to Venus

  • NASA has transmitted Missy Elliott’s 1997 hit song “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” to Venus, marking the first time a hip-hop song has been beamed into deep space.
  • The transmission was made possible through NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN), from their Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

  • Traveling at the speed of light, the song covered the vast distance of 158 million miles to Venus, taking approximately 14 minutes to reach its destination.
  • This mission underscores NASA’s ongoing exploration of Venus, with upcoming missions like DAVINCI and VERITAS slated to launch in the coming decade.
  • DAVINCI will study Venus’s atmosphere and drop a probe to its surface, while VERITAS aims to uncover the geological and environmental history of Venus compared to Earth. These efforts are part of broader international collaborations, including partnerships with the European Space Agency, signaling a new era in planetary exploration.

Jyotiraditya Scindia Launches NE-RACE Portal

  • Union Minister for the Development of the North East Region Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the North East Region Agri Commodity E-Connect (NERACE) designed to benefit the farmers of the region and help position it as a hub of high-value horticultural products in the international market.

  • The NERACE app is intended to support agricultural and horticultural products such as spices, fruits, vegetables, pulses, cereals, and minor forest products.
  • Furthermore, the NE-RACE App is designed to promote Northeast as a reliable partner in the international agricultural value chain.
  • The Department of Posts will be organizing 5,000 Dak Chaupals across the country in 100 days.

  • “This initiative aims to bring essential government and citizen-centric services directly to rural areas, improving accessibility and convenience. Dak Chaupals will serve as vital links between rural residents and government functions. Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra Scheme is set to bolster rural exports by supporting small-scale exporters. This initiative provides essential services including documentation assistance, market information, bar-coded label printing, and paperless customs clearance.

FIFA Rankings

  • Indian football team has retained its 124th spot while Lionel Messi’s Argentina consolidated the top position in the latest FIFA rankings issued.
  • In Asia, India is placed in the 22nd spot. India’s performance has been declining since December last year.

  • It had ranked 99 at its highest point when it first entered the top 100 last year, but it has since been falling.
  • Argentina’s unbeaten run to the continental title glory strengthened their hold at the top spot.
  • France maintained their second spot in the rankings after making it to the semifinals of Euro 2024. European champions Spain gained five places to finish third while finalist England moved up one place to fourth ahead of Brazil, which dropped to fifth.

ICC Men’s T20 Batting Rankings

  • In the latest ICC Men’s T20 Batting Rankings released, India’s Suryakumar Yadav has maintained his second position, while Yashasvi Jaiswal secured the sixth spot.
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad slipped one place to eighth in the batting rankings. Indian players have received a major boost in the latest rankings following their 4-1 win in the T20 series win in the T20 series against Zimbabwe.
  • In the men’s T20 All-Rounder rankings, Hardik Pandya is the only India player in the top ten who secured the sixth spot. Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasarnga has maintained the number one spot.
  • While, in the Men’s Test Batting Rankings, skipper Rohit Sharma secured the sixth spot and young star Yashasvi Jaiswal slipped one spot to eighth. Former skipper Virat Kohli has also slipped to tenth place.
