Budget 2024: All Eyes On Defence Allocation
- Agnipath, the scheme aimed at slashing India’s ballooning defence salary and pension bills, has turned into a hot potato for the BJP, drawing a barrage of criticism not only from the Opposition but also from its own allies like the Janata Dal (United) and the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in the past couple of years.
- Adding more fuel to the fire, military officers and veterans have alleged that the defence scheme now under review will “degrade” combat effectiveness and operational efficiency at a time when threats posed by neighbours China and Pakistan are on the rise.
- India’s defence budget allocation has steadily increased over the past four years. Starting at Rs 4.71 lakh crore in 2020, it rose to Rs 4.78 lakh crore in 2021, Rs 5.25 lakh crore in 2022, and Rs 5.94 lakh crore in 2023. The projected budget for 2024 is expected to surpass Rs 6 lakh crore, emphasizing a sustained upward trajectory.Growing economic heft over the years has given a boost to India’s military spending, which has risen to become the fourth largest in the world, as of 2022. Over the past 10 years, MoD’s expenditure has more than doubled, albeit with a highly uneven annual growth, says an Observer Research Foundation (ORF) report.
- Now, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman set to present the Union Budget on July 23, all eyes are on the defence allocation, which is expected to maintain its lion’s share among various expense heads.
