Justice M. Fathima Beevi

  • Justice M. Fathima Beevi, the first female Judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of India, passed away today at the age of 96 in Kollam in Kerala.
  • She was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kollam. Justice Beevi was the first woman to be a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

  • She was also the first Muslim woman to be appointed to the higher judiciary in the country.
  • She was born in Kerala in 1927 and her father encouraged her to study law. In 1950, she topped the Bar Council exam, becoming the first woman to receive a Bar Council gold medal.
  • She started her career as an advocate in Kerala and worked her way up to become a district and sessions judge in 1974.
  • In 1980, she joined the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and was appointed as a High Court judge in 1983. She made history in 1989 by becoming the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court.
  • After retiring in 1993, she served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission and then as Governor of Tamil Nadu. She resigned from the post of Governor of Tamil Nadu after rejecting the mercy petitions filed by four condemned prisoners in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Agreement Between Israel & Hamas

  • Israel and Hamas have reached a significant diplomatic breakthrough in their ongoing conflict.
  • The deal, announced involves the release of at least 50 hostages and numerous Palestinian prisoners.
  • The agreement also includes a four-day truce for besieged Gaza residents after weeks of intense warfare. As part of the deal, Palestinian militants are set to release 50 women and children who were kidnapped during a raid into southern Israel on October 7.

  • After weeks of negotiations facilitated by Qatar, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet approved the truce accord following an almost all-night meeting.
  • Hamas welcomed the “humanitarian truce,” indicating that 150 Palestinians would be released from Israeli jails.
  • The negotiations involved various parties, including the US Central Intelligence Agency, Mossad, Egyptian intelligence, and leaders in Doha, Cairo, Washington, Gaza, and Israel.
  • US President Joe Biden expressed satisfaction, highlighting the reunion of “brave souls” with their families. Qatar confirmed the deal, specifying the release of Palestinian women and children from Israeli prisons.

World Wushu Championship

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Roshibina Devi, Kushal Kumar, and Chavi for winning medals at the recently held 16th World Wushu Championship in the USA.

  • In a social media post, the Prime Minister said that their determination and skill have truly made the nation proud and he is confident that their success will make Wushu more popular in India.  He extended his best wishes to them for their future endeavours.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan

  • Department of Social Justice & Empowerment signed a MoU with International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) for Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) in the presence of Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment Dr. Virender Kumar, senior officers of the Department and senior members of the ISKCON in New Delhi.
  • While addressing the gathering, Dr. Virendra Kumar, MSJ&E said that association of religious/spiritual organizations for carrying out various activities under NMBA would get a boost towards achieving drug-sensitized India.

  • He said that this MoU with ISKCON would help in spreading the message of NMBA among the youth, women, students etc.
  • Dr. Virender Kumar asked ISKCON to publicize NMBA campaign at all their meetings and gatherings.

  • Minister informed that Ministry has developed Navchetna module, which will increase awareness and education on life skills and drug abuse among school students in India.
  • The main objective of this project is not only to slow down the onset of drug abuse among school children but also to stop it forever.
  •  Additionally, training material on NavChetan is being translated into 12 regional languages. Each module will also be available for online uploading on Diksha Portal to assist the teachers.

Saffron From Kishtwar In Jammu And Kashmir

  • Kishtwar saffron, a prized spice cultivated and harvested in the Kishtwar Region of Jammu and Kashmir, has recently been bestowed with the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry.
  • This recognition solidifies the unique identity and quality of saffron produced in the Kishtwar region of Jammu, complementing its already legendary reputation.
  • Kishtwar saffron finds its roots in the picturesque Kishtwar region, situated in the mountainous terrains of Jammu.

  • This spice, locally known as “KUNG” and nationally as “KESAR,” is a vital cash crop in this isolated district.
  • The saffron production area, aptly named Mandal, covers about 120 hectares of cultivable land, making Kishtwar a significant hub for saffron cultivation.
  • The quality of Kishtwar saffron stands out, even in comparison to the well-known Pampore saffron from Kashmir.
  • The superiority is attributed to various factors such as the quality of the land, the climate, and the meticulous technique of plucking flowers and separating the red and yellow carpels from the petals.

‘Water Smart Kid Campaign’

  • Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma launched the ‘Meghalaya Water Smart Kid Campaign.
  • This initiative, operating under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), aims to educate children about the vital importance of water conservation.
  • To address the urgent need for water conservation and sustainability, the Meghalaya State Government has undertaken various interventions.

  • These initiatives receive support from externally aided projects (EAPs) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India.
  • Chief Minister Sangma informed that the state is currently constructing 1000 water reservoirs to harness water effectively.
  • These efforts are complemented by soil rejuvenation projects aimed at increasing the groundwater table.  Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the paradox of Meghalaya’s water situation during the campaign launch.
  • Despite its designation as one of the wettest places on earth, the state encounters challenges in preserving its water resources.
  • Annually, Meghalaya receives an impressive 63 billion cubic liters of water through rainfall, but it can retain only 1 billion cubic liters.
  • The Chief Minister explained that out of the total, 31 billion cubic liters flow to Bangladesh, and an equivalent amount flows to Assam.
