BBC 100 Women 2023 List

  • The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) recently unveiled its 11th edition of the BBC 100 Women list for 2023, featuring inspiring and influential women from various fields around the world.
  • This prestigious list is categorized into Culture and Education, Entertainment and Sport, Politics and Advocacy, and Science, Health, and Tech.
  • The BBC 100 Women 2023 list not only recognizes the achievements of these four Indian women but also highlights their significant contributions in diverse fields, inspiring others around the globe.
  • The inclusion of a ‘Climate Pioneers’ category underscores the importance of women leading the charge against the climate crisis, with Arati Kumar-Rao representing India on this front.

  • BBC 100 Women 2023 which includes four Indian women viz. Actress Dia Mirza, Cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur, Photographer Arati Kumar­Rao, and Tibetan Buddhist nun Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo.
  • Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian Women’s National Cricket Team in all three formats, was recognized in the Entertainment & Sport category.

  • Dia Mirza, an award-winning actress, has been actively involved in social and environmental causes. Honored as UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador in 2017, she has also served as a brand ambassador for the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).  Tenzin Palmo, born in Hertfordshire, England, is a renowned author, teacher, and founder of the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in Himachal Pradesh, India.

Arati Kumar-Rao, an independent photographer and National Geographic Explorer, is dedicated to capturing the impact of environmental degradation on biodiversity.
  • She is currently working on documenting forced human migration in India with a National Geographic grant.

World’s First 3D-Printed Temple

  • Telangana has unveiled the world’s first 3D-printed temple, a groundbreaking structure situated in Burugupally, Siddipet district.
  • This innovative construction, achieved through a three-month 3D printing process, marks a significant technological milestone.
  • The temple spans 4,000 square feet and stands at a height of 35.5 feet. It comprises three distinct parts, each dedicated to a different deity:

  • Modak for Lord Ganesha: This sanctuary is shaped like a modak, a sweet dish that is traditionally offered to Lord Ganesha.
  • Square Shivalay for Lord Shankar: This sanctuary is square-shaped and dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • Lotus-Shaped Sanctuary for Goddess Parvati: This sanctuary is shaped like a lotus flower and dedicated to Goddess Parvati.
  • The sanctums were meticulously crafted using an in-house system, along with materials and software developed locally.

Namma Kambala

  • It marks the inaugural occurrence of Kambala within Bengaluru’s core, as teams from the coastal Karnataka area gear up to partake in this urban adaptation.

  • This event pledges to infuse the vivacious essence of this age-old sport into Bengaluru’s bustling cityscape, harmonizing tradition with modernity seamlessly.
  • The term “Kambala” traces its origins to ‘kampa-kala,’ where ‘kampa’ associates with a sludgy, muddy field—the very arena where the action unfolds.
  • The Dravidian roots of “Kampa” stem from the fusion of ‘kan’ and ‘pa,’ while ‘kala’ signifies the domain where the spectacle occurs. An alternative interpretation links Kambala to ‘Kamba,’ a pole employed for spurting water during the buffalo pairs’ race. Kambala epitomizes a sport where whiplash-wielding farmers propel buffaloes across slushy paddy fields.
  • Initially, Kambala was non-competitive, featuring pairs running sequentially. However, its modern rendition involves contests between two pairs of buffaloes, fostering a more competitive spirit.

  • In a remarkable turn of events at the Senior National Squash Championships 2023, 15-year-old Anahat Singh scripted history by becoming the second youngest title winner in the tournament’s prestigious history.
  • Joshna Chinappa was 14 when she won the first of her 19 titles in 2000.

  • Anahat’s victory marked a historic moment, as she triumphed against her opponent who is 12 years her senior. 
  • The championship match witnessed a gripping battle between the generations, with Anahat initially losing the opener 9-11.

Global Professional Accountants Convention

  • Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar will inaugurate the Global Professional Accountants Convention at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.
  • More than 4000 delegates from over 25 countries will take part in the three-day event and discuss various aspects to shape the future of the accountancy profession at the global level.

  • Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal and ICAI President, Aniket Sunil Talati will also be present at the inaugural session.
  • The three-day event will have more than 30 insightful sessions which will be addressed by eminent speakers including the Gujarat State Minister of Education Praful Pansheriya, Chairman Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India Debashis Panda, among others.

India, EU Sign MoU On Semiconductor Ecosystem

  • India and the European Union have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation on the semiconductor ecosystem and enhance resilience in the semiconductor supply chain.
  • The MoU was signed by Electronics, Information and Technology and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and European Commissioner for Internal Markets Thierry Breton during a virtual meeting of India – European Union Trade and Technology Council.

  • The meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and Minister of Electronics and Information Technology  Ashwini Vaishnaw. Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis and Vice-President Vera Jourova chaired the meeting from the European side.
  • The External Affairs Ministry said, the MoU symbolizes the strong commitment between India and EU to work towards building robust semiconductor supply chains and work together on innovation.
