India To Set Up Joint Theatre Commands Of Tri-services: Rajnath Singh
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday announced the setting up of joint theatre commands of the tri-services to enhance coordination among the armed forces.
- The defence minister also said India is moving quickly from being the world’s largest importer of defence equipment to an exporter.
- Referring to defence production, Singh said, “India was the world’s largest importer (of defence products). Today, India is not the world’s largest importer but is among the top 25 nations engaged in defence exports“.
- Singh said the country has started defence exports worth Rs 13,000 crore and it has fixed a target to increase it to Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 crore by 2025-26.
- This is Rajnath Singh’s second visit to Jammu in a little over a month. He visited the region on June 17 on the occasion of the 200th year of coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh.
Maritime Partnership Exercise Between Indian Navy And Japan
- A Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) was conducted between Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and Indian Navy on 23 Jul 22 in Andaman Sea. INS Sukanya, an offshore patrol vessel and JS Samidare, a Murasame class destroyer, undertook various exercises including seamanship activities, aircraft operations and tactical manoeuvres as part of the operational interaction. The two countries have been carrying out regular exercises in IOR towards reinforcing maritime association. The exercise were aimed at enhancing interoperability and streamlining seamanship and communication procedures. This exercise is part of the ongoing efforts between the two navies towards ensuring safe and secure international shipping and trade in Indian Ocean Region.

- Grenada’s Anderson Peters won the gold medal with a best throw of 90.54m. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch won bronze with a best throw of 88.09m.
- Chopra became only the second Indian — and first Indian man — to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships, after long jumper Anju Bobby George, who won bronze in 2003.
- The other Indian in the fray, Rohit Yadav finished at 10th with a best throw of 78.72m. Rohit had finished 11th overall in the qualification round with a best throw of 80.42m.
China Crushes People’s Freedom In Hong Kong Using National Security Law
- Imposed by China, the National Security Law in Hong Kong has led to the detainment of former opposition politicians and high-profile journalists and curbed the freedom of many others.
- China imposed a national security law on Hong Kong on June 30, 2020, and dozens of former opposition politicians and high-profile journalists were detained under the law.
- On 1 July 1997, Hong Kong was handed over to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from the United Kingdom under the conditions set out in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration. The Joint Declaration provides for fundamental rights, a high degree of autonomy and the “one country, two systems” in Hong Kong.
- “25 years later, Hong Kong is no longer the city we once recognised,” according to Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC). The draconian National Security Law, implemented on June 30, 2020, has been used to punish dissent, curtail protest and freedom of speech and reduce the city’s autonomy.
Indian Air Force team concludes Tactical Leadership Programme in Egypt
- Bolstering the defense cooperation, the IAF contingent deployed to Egypt has successfully completed the Tactical Leadership Programme (TLP) where the participants from both nations shared their knowledge of operational tactics.
- A team of the Indian Air Force arrived in Egypt on June 22 to participate in a bilateral ‘Tactical Leadership Programme’ with the Egyptian Air Force. The aim of the exercise is to understand and assimilate the best practices.
- The year 2022 is of particular significance since it marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Egypt.
- Egypt and India also enjoy cordial defense relations. There was close cooperation between the Air Forces, with efforts at jointly developing a fighter aircraft in the 1960s. IAF pilots had also trained Egyptian pilots from the 1960s until 1984. In the recent past, since 2015, there have been several high-level exchanges of visits by defense delegations.
- On Saturday, Egypt is also celebrating its National Day. Marking the occasion, the Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar congratulated the people of Egypt on their National Day and exuded confidence in the “long-standing partnership” between the nations.
Two More Women Officers Enter IAF Stream
- Two women officers have made it to an elite air force stream dominated by men for decades and have begun discharging their duties as flight test engineers – professionals who are responsible for evaluating aircraft and airborne systems before their induction into the armed forces, officials familiar with the development said on Saturday.
- Squadron Leaders Bhoomika Paliwal and Renuka Dey are among the only three women officers to have graduated as flight test engineers from the Air Force Test Pilot School in Bengaluru in its 50-year history, the officials said. Last year, Squadron Leader Aashritha V Olety became the air force’s first woman flight test engineer.
- Excluding the medical wing in which women have been serving for decades, the army accounts for around 7,000 women officers, while IAF and navy have more than 1,600 and 700 women officers each. In percentage terms, women still form a small part of the military – 0.56% of the army, 1.08% of the air force and 6.5% of the navy.
