World Drowning Prevention Day

  • World Drowning Prevention Day, declared through the April 2021 UN General Assembly Resolution “Global drowning prevention”, is held annually on 25 July.
  • This global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and offer life-saving solutions to prevent it.
  • An estimated 236,000 people drown every year, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children and youth aged 1-24 years.
  • More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells, and domestic water storage vessels in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.

World Embryologist Day

  • On this day world’s first IVF baby was born. Embryologists play an important role in an IVF clinic. They help in making babies happen or we can say that creating life in their hands. Sometimes they are also referred to as ‘caretakers’ of patients’ sperm, eggs, or embryos because they are the nurturers of this new start of life.
  • Basically, embryologists are those who study sperm, eggs, and embryos. They will be able to determine which sperm, eggs, and embryos are the healthiest and can be selected for IVF treatment.
  • Louise Joy Brown on 25 July became the first baby to be born due to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) method in 1978 and so every year on 25 July World Embryologist Day is observed.

Lokmanya Tilak Remembered On His Jayanthi

  • Bal Gangadhar Tilak (23 July 1856 – 1 August 1920), endeared as Lokmanya was an Indian nationalist, teacher, and independence activist. He was one-third of the Lal Bal Pal triumvirate.
  • Tilak was the first leader of the Indian independence movement. The British colonial authorities called him “The father of the Indian unrest”.
  • He was also conferred with the title of “Lokmanya”, which means “accepted by the people as their leader”.
  • Mahatma Gandhi called him “The Maker of Modern India”.

Chandra Shekhar Azad Remembered On His Jayanthi

  • Chandrashekhar Sitaram Tiwari (23 July 1906 – 27 February 1931), popularly known as Chandra Shekhar Azad, was an Indian revolutionary who reorganized the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) under its new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) after the death of its founder, Ram Prasad Bismil, and three other prominent party leaders, Roshan Singh, Rajendra Nath Lahiri and Ashfaqullah Khan.
  • He hailed from Badarka, (BAISWARA) Unnao in Uttar Pradesh and his parents were Sitaram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi.
  • He often used the pseudonym “Balraj” when signing pamphlets issued as the commander in chief of the HSRA.

India’s Merchandise Exports Jump About 27%

  • India’s Merchandise Exports During The First 6 Months Of The Calendar Year 2022 Jumped About 27% To 235 Billion USD, Compared With 185.9 Billion USD A Year Ago.
  • The Country’s Imports During January-June 2022 Stood At 361.1 Billion Dollars, Against 258.6 Billion In The Corresponding Period Last Year.
  • The Total Merchandise Export Was 421.9 Billion Dollars During 2021-22 Against The Export Target Of 400 Billion Dollars, Achieving 105.4% Of The Export Target.
  • Barring A Few Sectors, All Major Sectors During The January-June 2022 Showed A Positive Trend With An Overall Growth Rate Of 26.7%.

Ukraine And Russia To Allow Export Of Grain

  • Ukraine and Russia have signed an UN-backed deal to allow the export of millions of tonnes of grain from blockaded Black Sea ports.
  • The agreement potentially averted the threat of a catastrophic global food crisis.
  • A signing ceremony at Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul was attended by UN secretary general António Guterres, who had played a key role during months of tense negotiations. The delegates of Russia and Ukraine were also present.
  • Mr. Guterres said that the deal would open the way to significant volumes of food exports from Ukraine and alleviate a parallel food and economic crisis in the developing world.

ADB Cuts China’s Growth Forecast To 4% In 2022

  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) has cut its growth forecast for China to 4 percent in 2022 instead of 5 percent due to concerns over the country’s zero-Covid approach and strict lockdowns. 
  • These measures have deepened the crisis in the already battered real estate sector reeling from the high level of debts and mortgage defaults.
  • In its Asian Development Outlook, ADB said China’s continued adherence to a zero-covid strategy in response to renewed outbreaks early in 2022 has triggered the reimposition of strict lockdowns.
  • Amid a slowdown in China, ADB cut Asia’s growth forecast to 4.6 percent as the prolonged war in Ukraine has pushed commodity prices higher and triggered monetary tightening by many central banks to control inflation.
  • By 2023, ADB lowered its economic growth projection for developing Asia and the Pacific region to 5.2 percent from 5.3 percent, while raising the inflation forecast to 3.5 percent from 3.1 percent.

1st Khelo India Fencing Women’s League

  • The 1st Khelo India Fencing Women’s league will start on Monday at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi. Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry said the first-of-its-kind national fencing competition for women will take place until the 29th of this month.
  • It will be held in over three phases. A total of one crore 54 lakh has been sanctioned by the Sports Authority of India over the conduct of the league. The prize money for each phase has been earmarked at over 17 Lakh rupees.
  • Over 300 women across twenty States have registered to participate in the event.
  • Tokyo Olympiad and Target Olympic Podium Scheme athlete Bhavani Devi will be a participant in the league in the Senior category Sabre event. She is representing the State of Tamil Nadu.

Neeraj Chopra Shines @ World Athletics Championships

  • Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra created history by winning a Silver medal in the men’s javelin throw event at World Athletics Championships.
  • In the prestigious competition held at Eugene in Oregon, United States, the champ grabbed the second position with his best throw of 88.13 meters.
  • Grenadian javelin thrower Anderson Peters won the gold medal with a throw of 90.54 meters.
  • Neeraj Chopra is the first ever Indian to win a silver medal at World Athletics Championships.
  • He is the second Indian after former long jumper Anju Bobby George, who won a bronze medal in the long jump in 2003 in Paris.

Monkeypox Declared “A Global Health Emergency”

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an outbreak of Monkeypox a global health emergency.
  • It came at the end of the second meeting of the WHO’s emergency committee on the virus. The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases.
  • WHO director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, more than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries. There have been five deaths so far as a result of the outbreak.
  • There are only two other health emergencies currently – the coronavirus pandemic and the continuing effort to eradicate polio.
