Successful Training Launch of Agni-1 Ballistic Missile 

  • A successful training launch of a Medium-Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-1 was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha on June 01, 2023. The missile is a proven system, capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision.
  • The user training launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile.

Nepal Wants Better Terms For Gurkha Fighters Joining Indian Army                                

  • Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal will use his trip to India to push for better terms for Gurkha fighters recruited for India’s army, posing a test for New Delhi as it vies for influence with Beijing in the Himalayan nation.
  • Ties between Nepal and India came under strain when PM Narendra Modi’s government last year replaced long-term employment with shorter contracts tenure and no pension. Nepal, weeks later, stopped the 200-year-old recruitment process until there was more clarity.
  • Nepalis make up about 60% of India’s 44 Gurkha battalions, which each comprise of a thousand soldiers. These battalions continually rotate through India’s western and northern borders with Pakistan and China, making them a significant part of India’s military planning.
  • Gurkha troops have been part of the subcontinent’s military since 1815 when the British East India Company and the Kingdom of Nepal signed a peace treaty, opening the doors for enlisting them.
  • An agreement between London, New Delhi and Kathmandu after India’s independence in 1947 allowed India and Britain to continue recruiting Gurkha fighters into their armies.

Change Of Command Of Air Force Station Hindan 

  • Air Commodore Sanjay Chopra took over command of Air Force Station Hindan from Air Commodore Vinay Pratap Singh on 01 Jun 23. An impressive parade was held on this occasion.
  • Air Commodore Sanjay Chopra was commissioned as Helicopter Pilot in the Indian Air Force in December 1995. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor, has flown more than 4700 hours and is an alumnus of the College of Air Warfare, Secunderabad.
  • The Air Officer has commanded a Helicopter Unit, and a Flying Station and has held various operational appointments. He is a recipient of the Vayu Sena Medal.

IAF Trainer Aircraft Crashes In Karnataka, Pilots Safe

  • An Indian Air Force’s (IAF) trainer aircraft crashed in an open field in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar.
  • The Kiran trainer aircraft crashed near Makali village in Chamarajanagar district during a routine training sortie. Both the pilots of the aircraft ejected safely.
  • A Court of inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the crash.

33 Gallantry And Distinguished Service Awards Conferred At Naval Investiture Ceremony 2023

  • The Naval Investiture Ceremony, 2023 for the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) was held in Visakhapatnam.
  • As per an official release from the Defence Ministry, CONS R Hari Kumar conferred thirty-three gallantry and distinguished service awards during the Naval Investiture Ceremony.
  • In addition to these awards, the CNS also presented the Lt VK Jain Memorial Gold Medal for pioneering research in the field of Weapon Improvement and Electrical Engineering, as well as the Capt. Ravi Dhir Memorial Gold Medal for promoting Flight Safety.
  • Indian naval vessels Betwa, Satpura, Sutlej and Nireekshak, Kalvari class submarine INS Karanj along with INAS 321 FSS and INAS 318 received the Unit Citation.
