INS Malwan Delivered: Boost to Coastal Defence

India has received INS Malwan, the second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), built by Cochin Shipyard Limited. Delivered on 31 March 2026, this vessel marks another milestone in strengthening indigenous naval capabilities.

Designed according to stringent naval standards and DNV classification norms, the ship features over 80% indigenous components, aligning with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

These compact yet highly capable vessels are specifically engineered to detect, track, and neutralize underwater threats in coastal waters. INS Malwan is part of an eight-vessel programme approved by the Ministry of Defence, aimed at replacing ageing Abhay-class corvettes.

Named after the historic coastal town of Malwan in Maharashtra, associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the ship continues a legacy of maritime strength.

Key Features of INS Malwan:

  • Length: ~80 meters
  • Displacement: ~1,100 tonnes
  • Propulsion: Waterjet system for high maneuverability
  • Armament: Lightweight torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets
  • Sensors: Advanced sonar and radar systems
  • Roles: Anti-submarine warfare, mine warfare, surveillance

It follows INS Mahe (delivered in 2025) and is part of a fleet that will significantly strengthen India’s coastal security network.

GE Delivers Sixth F404 Engine to HAL

GE Aerospace has delivered the sixth F404-IN20 engine to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the Tejas Mk-1A fighter programme.

However, progress has been slower than expected. Only six engines were delivered in the financial year, compared to the originally planned eleven.

While the formal handover has taken place, reports suggest that the engine has not yet physically reached India. The transfer is believed to have occurred at a facility in the United States.

Supply chain disruptions, partly due to geopolitical tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran, have affected production timelines. These issues have impacted the execution of the larger 99-engine contract signed earlier.

Despite delays, both GE Aerospace and HAL are working closely to streamline production and ensure timely delivery of remaining engines.
