MoD Declares 2025 as ‘Year of Reforms’

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh chaired a meeting with all the Secretaries of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on the eve of the New Year to review the progress on various schemes, projects, reforms and the way ahead.
  • In order to give impetus to the ongoing and future reforms, it was unanimously decided to observe 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms’ in the MoD.
  • This would aim at transforming the Armed Forces into a technologically-advanced combat-ready force capable of multi-domain integrated operations.

Navy to Commission 2 Frontline Warships, 1 Submarine on Jan 15

  • The Indian Navy will commission two indigenously constructed frontline warships and a diesel-electric submarine on January 15 that is expected to significantly enhance the force’s overall combat prowess.
    • All the three platforms — guided-missile destroyer Surat, stealth frigate Nilgiri and submarine Vagsheer — are equipped with the latest weapons and sensors.
    • The warships and submarine will be commissioned at a ceremony at the naval dockyard in Mumbai.
    • All three platforms have been designed and constructed entirely at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, a testament to India’s growing self-reliance in the critical domain of defence production.

  • Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra assumed command of the Indian Air Force’s Western Air Command on 01 January 2025.
  • The Air Marshal was commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot on 06 December 1986.  He is an alumnus of NDA Pune, Air Force Test Pilots School, Bangalore, Air Command and Staff College, USA and Royal College of Defence Studies, UK.

Indian Armed Forces Chiefs to Get aides from Sister Services

  • In Short
  • Move aims to enhance ‘theaterisation’ of Indian defence forces
  • India set to be 1st democratic country to achieve jointness of forces through consensus
  • General Anil Chauhan leads consensus-based approach for tri-service synergy
  • The personal staff officers for service chiefs of all defence forces, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, will be appointed from their sister services from January 1, 2025, marking a significant move towards achieving uniformity in the forces.
  • This will be a major move towards the ‘theaterisation‘ of the defence forces, a process which began with the appointment of the first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, in 2020.
  • All service chiefs used to get their personal staff officers, known as Aide-de-Camp (ADCs), from not only their own services, but also from a unit with which they felt connected.
  • This will be the first time that ADCs will be appointed for service chiefs from other services.
